    The achievement of space travel stands as a triumphant moment in history and such an extraordinary task contains a multitude of details to be explored. Arguably, one of the most important details to be understood was nutrition in space. Easy to overlook from an outside viewpoint but, food remains an essential aspect to space travel. This is a display and evolution of food created for and utilized by Astronauts in their traverse to space.

    John Glen stands as the first American to eat in space. He was provided with tubes of applesauce and a beef and vegetable puree. Food was eaten out of these toothpaste-esque tubes in fear of spreading food particles across equipment in a zero gravity environment. These were considered unappetizing and would lead to more consultation.

    After more was known about the properties of eating in space, dehydrated food was being utilized to provide astronauts a more palatable variety of food. Dehydration also allowed food products to maintain as low a weight as possible. The foods would be re-hydrated after reaching space using water. The plan for obtaining the water was still in progress but would involve using hydrogen fuel already on board.

    - A Documentary with NASA Food Scientists "The Best Space Archives" After the previous space expeditions, a major focus came to astronaut opinions of food and creating a variety of densely nutritious food options. Freeze-dried food became an option alongside dehydrated foods already being utilized and astronauts were provided menus and tested on food preferences to created a more sustainable environment in space.

    Food continued to develop into a large variety of palatable options similar to ones found in restaurants around the world. Furthermore, heating trays were created and connected to table surfaces to make eating an easier task. Food convenience would continue to develop.

    Freeze-dried and Dehydrated foods drinks have remained in use but packaging and re-hydration methods have become more efficient and convenient allowing astronauts to eat food out of a bag with utensils in a zero gravity environment. The bags rely on moisture sticking the food to the edge of the containers. The eating experience for astronauts has expanded to match that of eating on earth.
