Proclamation of Neutrality
Issued by President George Washington, the proclamation said that the United States would not offer protection to Americans who violated neutrality laws, and that the United States would actively prosecute anyone within its jurisdiction who violated international law with respect to neutrality. -
XYZ Affair
Occured in 1797-1798. In an effort to keep peace between America and France, John Adams sent two American diplonmats to meet with French officials. The French sent three agents (X,Y, and Z) to demand money from the Americans before the French officals would meet with them. -
Convention of 1800
An agreement of peace between France and America. -
Lousiana Purchase
Napoleon (the leader of france at the time) refused America's first attempt at buying New Orlands . So Jefferson sent James Monroe to France, in hopes of convincing Napoleon to reconsider. Napoleon did more than that! He offered to sell all of the Louisiana Territory, more than 828,000 square miles! So America bought the land for 15 millionn dollors. -
Embargo Act
Stopped trade between the United states and France and Great Britain. Was a disaster to the the American economy. -
War of 1812
The British were doing impressment. American leaders weren't happy about this and wanted to go to war. Many battles were fought between 1812-1814 in America and during the war the White House was burnt down to the ground. -
Treaty of Ghent
The peace treaty that ended the war of 1812. It presented no gains for ether side. -
Monroe Doctrine
Issued by James Monroe. Basically said the United States would not take European intervention in the affairs of any independant nation in the Americas. Also said the Americas was not allowing any more colonization.
