Introduction of the Boeing 747 'jumbo jet'
The Boeing 747-400 is a wide-body airliner produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. There was an advanced version which came out after this "Advanced series 300" which came out in September 1984. The very first Boeing 747 can now be seen in the Museum of Flight in Seattle. This impacted the tourism industry as this was the key to flights and travelling to destinations all over the world. This opened peoples eyes to a wider picture. -
The number of cars owned increased to 11 million
Cars owned in this year reached 11 million on the road. Around this time, cars were popular and new cars also started to appear. In 1970, the interior of cars became more luxurious and more sporty. This is the reason for the amount of cars that we're purchased in this year. -
Concorde
Concorde was the first supersonic passenger-carrying commercial airplane. Concorde made its first translantic crossing on September 26th, 1973. British Airways flew aircrafts from London to Bahrain, Air France flew from Paris to New York City in November 1977. They then started adding other routes and destinations to their chart, overtime, Concorde was flying to worldwide destinations. Concorde operations were eventually ceased by Air France in May 2003 and by British Airways in October 2003. -

In this time, there was a huge improvement and growth in package holidays, it also increased because of the amount of airlines that were made at this time, there was an increase in all tourism and adverts on the TV also made people want to go on these vacations. -
Launch of Ryanair
Ryanair is a family shared business, they started off with cheaper flights and took their first route in July with daily flights on a 15-seater Bandeirante aircraft, operating daily from Waterford in the southeast of Ireland to London Gatwick. The cabin was smaller than most other aircrafts. This aircraft and airline is still flying today and Ryanair is well known around the world. This was one of the first airlines to have launched. -
Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet
Tim Berners-Lee is a computer scientist, also known as the inventor of the world wide web. He is down as one of the 100 greatest thinkers off the 20th century. He was born in London on June 8, 1955, to computer scientists Mary Lee Woods and Conway Berners-Lee. -
No-Frills airlines taken off
This is the reason for people going on shorter holidays but more frequent holidays every year, it is because this airline has grown and this is one of the budget airlines. These airlines were different airlines such as easy jet, jet lines, sky bus etc. these were just budget airlines that were made quickly. -
EasyJet Launched
EasyJet started flying in 1995. The aircraft used by the airline was leased for the first year from British Airways, EasyJet then bought their first plane for their company in April 1996. EasyJet then started winning awards for their reputation and began to grow as an organization and a family. EasyJet launched after Ryanair, however, they are still being used today. -
The Channel Tunnel Opening
The Channel Tunnel is one of the biggest engineering projects ever undertaken in the UK. The length of the tunnel is 50km. They first started constructing the tunnel in 1988. It took more than five years to complete and took more than 13,000 workers from England and France to build. The Channel can carry trains, cars, motorbikes, coaches etc. Cars can not be driven through the Channel, but can be transported through otherwise with the passengers staying in their vehicle at all times. -
Trip Advisor
Trip Advisor was launched in 2000, with their first review published 1st February 2001. Trip advisor allows people to access this app/website and search what holiday or location they would like to read other peoples reviews about. Previous customers would have put their own reviews about an accommodation so the next customer can see if they would like to go to the same accommodation and if it suits their needs. Trip advisor made the tourism industry easier so people could look before going. -

Multi Centre trips gives you the experience to travel to more than one place in one trip compared to staying in one destination only for the entire duration, instead, you can split your holiday in to two separate holidays for the same duration period. Some multi center holidays offer travellers the opportunity to visit several locations as part of one longer holiday, cramming in more of the places they wish to see. This also gives customers the opportunity to get their moneys worth. -
Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings trilogy may have been set in the fictional Middle Earth, but the actual filming locations are in New Zealand. This was a huge film at the time and still is today, they also created sequels to this film so people were even more interested. Films such as this make the audience want to watch more and learn about where the film was taken place, this means that it helps tourism as people will then want to travel to the location it was filmed at. -
Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami
On December 26th, 2004, tragedy struck in the Indian Ocean when an undersea earthquake caused a series of large tsunami waves, growing up to 30m tall. The disaster affected 14 countries, including Indonesia, Thailand and India, and caused widespread destruction, estimated at a cost of around $508 million. Many tourists were caught up in the tsunami, with more having to cancel trips to the area. Tsunamis and earthquakes ruin a destination for tourism so people will not want to go here. -
Mamma Mia
The hugely popular Mamma Mia film, featuring Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep, was made on the Greek Island of Skopelos. This has contributed widely in tourism in Greece, seeing a huge increase in the number of visitors to the area and helping the Greek recovery after their financial crash. This is now a hugely populated area and spoken about around the world. Greece is now known as one of the number one locations to travel to as people want the same experience as they did in the film. -

Instagram has changed the lives of many people just from posting pictures of themselves, this either makes them well known and popular with steady lives, or it can change peoples lives for the worst, making them depressed because of hate comments etc. Instagram is a social media platform and has loads of positives and negatives, you need to be willing to let some people in unless you make yours private. Instagram is a platform to post yourself to make yourself known in the world. -
Icelandic Ash Cloud
In 2010 a series of volcanic eruptions in Eyjafjallajkökull, Iceland caused an ash cloud which wreaked havoc on air travel in Europe. They worried that the ash would damage aircraft engines if they attempted to travel through it. The airspace around Europe was closed. -
Game of Thrones
This was one of the biggest events in television history, Game of Thrones , has inspired travel to its many filming locations. Dubrovnik in Croatia, the setting of kings Landing, has seen a surge in popularity. Filming in Northern Ireland, Iceland and Spain have been a huge draw for fans of the TV show. This TV show started in 2011 and finished in 2019. This series went on for a long time and is one of the longest series made. Again, people want to travel to destinations it was filmed in. -

Foreign holidays have increased in people visiting and this is the highest they have ever been with 47million, with spending hitting £45.4 billion and 292.1 million passengers flying out of UK airports. -

In 2019, almost 20 years after its inception, Trip Advisor had 460 million average monthly unique visitors to the site and over 830 million reviews covering 9.1 million hotels, restaurants, airlines attractions and more. -

The coronavirus is a virus that started in China, this spreader rapidly throughout every country and started in 2020, this was a terrible year for everyone as you must wear masks everywhere you travel. This virus is still going on now to the present day and scientists are still trying to find a vaccine with 2 already made. This is a life or death virus and needs to be dealt with very soon. People are dying every day because of this and numbers are increasing constantly.
