Dennis Ritchie received his bachelor's degree in physics from Harvard University. -
Started working for Bell Labs
When he started working for Bell labs, Ritchie immediately started working on the Multics operating system. -
Doctorate in mathematics
Continuing his education at Harvard University, Ritchie received his Doctorate in mathematics. -
Assisted in the creation of the Unix operating system
After AT&T removed GE machines, Dennis Ritchie and Kenneth Thompson created the Unix operating system. -
Took part in the B programming language
As with other projects, Ritchie assisted Kenneth Thompson in creating the B programming language. -
Created C programming language
When issues started with B programming, Ritchie created created the C language that is one of the most widely used programming languages to date. -
Published Unix programmers manual
Among all of his accomplishments, Dennis Ritchie also published the Unix programmers manual. -
Rewrote Unix in C programming language
Rewrote Unix operating system, with Ken Thompson, in C language because there were issues with B language with Unix OS during the migration to minicomputers. -
Co-winner of the Turing Award
The highest honor award was given to Ritchie and his partner Kenneth Thompson for their creation of the Unix operating system. -
Became a fellow at Bell Labs
Ritchie finally became a fellow at Bell labs. -
Published C Programming Language
Ritchie published the title, The C Programming Language, alongside Brian W. Kernighan. -
Elected to U.S. National Academy of Engineering

Appointed head of system software research department
In the long list of his accomplishments, Ritchie was appointed the head of the System Software Research Department and in this role he went on to lead more developments of operating systems. -
Led develop of Plan 9
After he was appointed the head of the System Software Research department, Ritchie led the development of another operating system that is called Plan 9. -
Led development of Inferno OS
With yet another OS under his belt, Ritchie led the development of the OS Inferno. -
Awarded U.S. National Medal of Technology
Even after receiving the Turing award in 1983, Ritchie and Thompson got another award, U.S. National Medal of Technology, for their development of Unix OS. -
Death
After fighting prostate cancer and heart disease Dennis Ritchie passed away in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.
