On September 11, three attacks were performed on United States soil using commercial aircraft, and a fourth was attempted. The World Trade Center North and South towers in New York City were struck, as was the Pentagon. A fourth attack was planned, with a fourth aircraft meant to strike Washington, D.C. on the same day. The 9/11 Attacks remain the most costly terrorist attack in United States history.
