Known as the Milan Conference this declared that oral teaching is superior to the teaching of sign language. There were no Deaf individuals at this conference. -

March 6 - Elisabeth Zinser is nominated to be the President for Gallaudet University and that caused the begin of a protest because the students wanted a Deaf President and Zinser was not Deaf. -

March 7- The students came with a list of demands 1. Zinser must resign and there must be a Deaf President put in place. 2. Spilman (board chair) must resign. 3. The percentage of Deaf members on the board must be increased by 51%. 4. There must be no reprisals against any of the protesters. -

March 11- Elisabeth Zinser resigns and I. King Jordan (Deaf) becomes President of Gallaudet University and only 3 1/2 of the demands were met. -
