On November 1, 1755 in Lisbon Portugal a magnitude 9 earthquake off the coast triggered waves up to 23ft high which killed over 20,000 people. -
Krakatoa Eruption
A small uninhabited island in the Indonesian island chain was shattered by a volcanic eruption that trigged earthquakes and Tsunamis up to 115ft high. The resulting disasters from the eruption killed 36,000 people on the surrounding islands and the ash from the volcano temporarily blocked out the sun. -
Aleutian Islands Earthquake
On April 1, 1946, a magnitude 8.1 Earthquake off the Alaskan island chain triggered a series of Tsunamis that ended up killing 160 people and did 26 million dollars in damage. -
Chilean Earthquake/Tsunami
This earthquake, which took place the morning of May 22nd, 1960, was a magnitude 9.5, which is the highest magnitude of any in recorded history. It only killed 61 people, however it was so great that the Earth's crust shook for over 10 minutes before finally stopping. -
"Good Friday" Earthquake
This Earthquake and subsequent Tsunami occurred on Good Friday, giving it the name the Good Friday Earthquake. The quake happened in southern Alaska, and killed 130 people. It was a magnitude 9.2, which is one of the biggest ever. Tsunamis reached California as well. -
Okushiri Earthquake
This Earthquake occurred in the Sea of Japan and was recorded as a magnitude 7.8. The quake killed 120 people in the surrounding areas. It happened in the morning and did a lot of natural damage on the island. -
Papua New Guinea Earthquake
On July 17, 1998, a magnitude 7.1 Earthquake and Tsunami hit the island of Papua New Guinea. The disaster ended up killing over 2000 people, many of whom were killed by the landslide that was triggered by the earthquake. -
Sumatran Earthquake and Tsunami
This Earthquake had an epicenter in the Indian Ocean. It occurred at about 8am local time and was a magnitude 9.1. The resulting Tsunami was extremely lethal, killing 230,000 people on the extremely populated island of Sumatra, making it one of the most lethal disasters of all time. -
Samoan Earthquake
This magnitude 8.1 earthquake affected the Samoan islands and resulted in the deaths of 200 people. It is not the most recent earthquake to hit the island, but it is most certainly one of the more deadly to hit the island. -
Second Chilean Earthquake
In the late afternoon of February 27, 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked the coastal South American country of Chile. The Earthquake generated a Tsunami which killed 700 people in the coastal towns in the area. -
Fukushima Earthquake
This was one of the worst natural disasters of all time. The magnitude 9.1 Earthquake hit near Japan which triggered a massive Tsunami which killed 20,000 people. This Tsunami knocked out the cooling systems in the nearby nuclear reactors which nearly caused a full on Nuclear meltdown and contaminated some of the seawater which got back out to sea.
