Women
While the men went to war many women took over many of the duties. on farms,women planting thier crops and cared for livestock. In towns, women often ran thier husbands businesses. Many of the women accompained thier husbands to miliatry camps. in battle the would take care of the wounded. One day ao moman named Deborah Sampson, she joined the army be disguising her self as a man. She would tend to her own wounds to keep her secret. After all of that the women started to have confidence. -
Native American Take Sides
The Americans tried to keep the Native Americans neutral. They also offered payments to groups willing to remain peace but still the Native went to the British side. They feard that an American victory would mean more settlers moving west or south onto Native Lands. Many Indians could not agree on which side to join. thousand of the indians were driven west by raids. To make it even wores the smallpox spread first among the American soldiers in Quebec in 1775. -
Financial Burdens
It was a hard task for the Congress to pay the war because they had limited resource. Since the Congress can not tax the poeple they went on pleading to other states for money. Howevr, the states had little themselves. The Congress then started to print out papermoney so that the can psy and supply the troops. By the end of the war the paper money had lost all its value. -
Defending the Frontier
The people in Virginia were looking for a way to protect ther state and to attack the British forts beyond the Appalachian Mountians. Virginia sent George Rogers Clark and a samll militia to strike the British. while they were on thier way, they captured two Mississippi River outposts which were Kaskaskia and Cahokia. Clarks men trudged across 200 miles splashing through icy floodwater up to their chest. Their midwinter attack caught the British by suprise. -
Help From the Spanish
The spanish were eager to get back Florida from Britaian. Before Spain can even declare war to the British Govener Bernardo de Galvez began to help the Americans. Galvez secretly provided money and munitions to Clark and other Americans. He also gave American ships safe refuge in New Orleans harbor. Galvez also capture British forts on the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico. Finacial help also came form Cuba. -
The War at Sea
The most famouse naval battle took place in the coast of England. The American ship was lead by a man named John Paul Jones. The Bonhomme Richard ship fought against the British warship Serapis. Both ships fire at each other with cannons and muskets, both ships had blast holes in their wooden sides. Even though Jones ship was in tatters he refused to give up, he said "I have not yet begun to fight." Finally with dozens of saliors dead on each side, the captian of the Serapis surrenderd.
