Darwins Observations

  • Beagle Voyage

    A 5 year trip on a boat called the Beagle, in which Darwin explored South America and the islands. He collected new specimens to study and sent them back home along with new information he wrote in his notebook. He called the Beagle voyage the most important event in his life.
  • Embarking on Journey

    Charles Darwin engages in the Beagle Voyage as the captains assistant.
  • Cape Verde Islands

    Darwin is surprised about his new observations. He then begins to think he will write a book about the geology and what he saw in the new places he visited.
  • Crossing the Equator

    Darwin finally crosses the equator and he shows his opinion on the ships. How the ships can easily tilt into the ocean and the water pours all over the boat.
  • Salvador, Brazil

    Darwin looks into the rainforests, he was very excited about the experience. He has never seen anything like it, he mentions the grass, the trees, the vegetation, and the flowers in the forest.
  • Punta Alta, Argentina

    Darwin finds fossils and is very interested. He believes that many of the fossils he found are new discoveries.
  • Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

    Captain Fitzroy returns three native people back to their original home. Fitzroy wants to start a Christian mission that fails.
  • Falkland Islands

    Darwin finds the Falkland islands that are desolate but then finds fossils. These islands were previously home to two-shelled animals that were once the most abundant organisms on Earth.
  • Rio Negro, Argentina

    Darwin starts exploring an area called the Pampas. The people of the area Pampas called "gauchos" live independently.
  • Chiloe Island, Chile

    Darwin is able to see Mount Osorno erupt while he is on the island. Specifically in the woods near Valdivia. He was very upset with the destruction of the earthquake caused to the island.
  • Galapagos Islands

    Darwin finds numerous species of plants, birds, and tortoises that are unique. He studies iguanas and finds that the marine iguana is the only one that goes into the water. Many of the animals colors blended into their surroundings. He also found out that a species he studied and thought were all different birds were all actually different types of finches.
  • Cape Town, South Africa

    The first object Darwin sees are the bullock wagons. As well as the horizontally stratified sandstone that rises to a height of about 3,500 feet.
  • Sydney, Australia

    Darwin arrived to Sydney Cove.
  • Cocos Islands (Keeling Islands)

    Darwin studies the coral reefs that grow around the islands to test his theory of atoll formation.
  • Mauritus

    Darwin takes a walk and wonders about the plain he is walking on. It is uncultivated and has black lava smoothed with grass.
  • Bahia and Pernambuco, South America

    Darwin enters the jungles of South America and finds many new creatures. He although is not happy for the unscheduled detour to make additional measurements.
  • Falmouth, England

    Darwin arrives home late at night. He was very overwhelmed and excited with all of the new information he found out about new creatures and the new lands. The Beagle ship carried 74 people and was only 90 feet long.
