    Take Off
    The ship, The Beagle, was under the command of Captain Fitz Roy and sailed from Devonport, England. The goal was to visit the shores of Chile, Peru, and other pacific islands to complete the survey that Captain King started from 1826-1830.
  • Teneriffe

    Teneriffe
    On January 6th 1832, the Beagle reached Teneriffe. The Beagle had to prevent landing because they had to avoid bringing Teneriffe the cholera.
  • Porto Praya, St. Jago

    Porto Praya, St. Jago
    On January 16th 1832, the Beagle anchored at Porto Praya in St. Jago which is the chief island of the Cape de Verde archipelago. At Porto Praya there was evidence from volcanic eruptions so most of the land could not grow vegetation. There are many hills and mountains there.

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    The morning of July 5th 1832 the Beagle left for the harbour of Rio de Janerio. On the way, the people aboard the ship so much marine life cut above the water. Once they entered the Plata, the weather was very unsettled. The first night, the ship was surrounded by seals and penguins. The second night, natural fireworks could be seen from the Beagle.

    Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
    After the Beagle finished its journey with Patagonia and the Falkland Islands, it arrived in Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. The Beagle then doubled Cape St. Diego and arrived in Le Maire. Then, the boat was anchored in the Bay of Good Success. The Bay of Good Success was a good and fortunate place to stop as it would have been hard to stay at sea.

    The Beagle left Maldonado and on August 3rd it arrived off the mouth of Rio Negro. The Rio Negra is the river that funs the whole line of coast between the Strait of Magellan and the Plata.

    The Beagle arrived in Buenos Aires on August 24th 1833 and a week after sailed towards the Plata. Captain Fitz Roy allowed Charles Darwin to stay behind to travel by land. Charles Darwin made some observations and surveyed the harbour.

    Port St. Julian, Argentina
    Everything from Rio Plata to Tierra del Fuego has been greatly effected. That is a 1200 mile distance. It has been raised in mass and height. It was larger by 300-400 feet. This happened within the period of the now existing seashells. That did not happen right away, though. It had not been growing or developing for 8 long periods. During that time, the land eroded from the sea and formed long lines of cliffs.

    Bay of South Carlos, Chile
    The Beagle sailed from Low's Harbour and three days later anchored in the bay of S. Carlos in Chiloe. On January 19th, the Osorno Volcano errupted. Much molten matter was spewed out and fell onto the ground. The next morning, the volcano was tranquil.

    Valdivia, Chile
    Charles Darwin made it to Valdivia, Chile and as he lyed down in the sand, an earthquake hit and lasted about 2 minutes. Captain Fitz Roy and other officers were in town and the earthquake hit harder in town.

    Concepcion, Chile
    On March 4th 1835, the Beagle entered the harbour of Concepcion. The ship was anchored and they landed on the island Quiriquina. The mayor came over and told Charles Darwin about the earthquake that had just happened. Many of the houses were destroyed.There were household items everywhere, and many villages looked destroyed.

    Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
    The archipelago of the Galapagos Islands have 10 islands and 5 are larger than the others. They are below the equator 500-600 miles west of the American coast. These islands were formed from volcanic rocks. The larger islands are very large and tall.
  • Albemarle Island

    The Beagle doubled the southwest of Albemarle Island. They saw many odd looking lizards along the coast on the rocks. The nothern part of that island is very curious and Charles Darwin felt that it did not get as much attention as it deserved. He also saw many birds that he claimed to look like and remind him of finches.

    Tahiti Island, French Polynesia
    On November 15th 1835, Tahiti was in view of the Beagle. Charles Darwin said that from a distance it did not look attractive. As soon as they anchored Matavai, the ship was surrounded by canoes.
  • Sydney, Australia

    Sydney, Australia
    On January 12th 1836, they reached Port Jackson. Port Jackson had nice houses and a straight line of yellowish cliffs that reminded Darwin of Patagonia. When they traveled inland, they realized how beautiful it was.

    The Beagle arrives in Cocos Island in the Indian Ocean.
  • Port Louis, Mauritius

    Port Louis, Mauritius
    The Beagle sailed from Port Louis and on July 8th arrived off of St. Helena. St. Helena rises and looks like a huge black castle from the ocean. The houses are normal houses, not large and not small. St. Helena has a few green trees scattering it.
  • Ascension

    On July 19th 1836 the Beagle reahced Ascension. It had a very dry climate. There were smooth hills that were bright red and black rugged lava rising from separate ground.
  • Falmouth, England

    Falmouth, England
    On October 2nd 1836, thee Beagle reached the shore of Falmouth, England. Charles Darwin lived on that ship nearly 5 years.
