Free Will
Daniel Dennett is an American philosopher who specialized in philosophy of science and philosophy of the mind. One of the area Dennett was particularly fond of was free will. This included freedom from religion as well as freedom from the values taught by society. This led him to write his first book in college, Content and Consciousness. (Britannica, 2019) -
Consciousness Expanied
Dennett would continue similar mind studies with the book Conscious Explained. This book expressed Dennett’s thoughts about how the consciousness worked. Some critics expressed concern that the consciousness is too complex to be explained at all, but Dennett’s work had some great ideas such as heterophenomenology. This planted the idea that our experiences towards a certain object is considered to our opinion, but it may not be evidence to what that object actually is. (Yee, 1993) -
Evolution of the Mind
In the recent year Dennett has spent a lot of his time studying evolution. When most people hear that term, they automatically think about the evolution of animals. Dennett tied it to much more. Dennett argued that all aspects of life goes through some sort of evolution. (Argument, 2016) -
Religion
Dennett has also tackled the idea of religion. He is fine with religions existing, but he believes religions should be subject to testing on a scientific level. The new age of information makes it impossible for humans to only live of faith in the unknown. You cannot raise a child anymore that is shielded from the outside.
