Fidel Castro assumes power in Cuba
Fidel Castro finally succedes in his attempt to overthrow prime minister Batista using gueilla warfare. A new government was formed under prime minister Jose Miro Cardona. Castro arrives in Havanna to crowds of cheering people and assumes position as commander-in-chief of military. Cardona suddenly resigns an Castro assumes power as prime minister.

The Cuban Missile Crisis and After Effects
During this time period Fidel Castro became the dictator of Cuba. Soon after Cuba openly allies with the Soviet Union and their policies. The USA soon ends all diplomatic ties with Cuba and President Kennedy assures the people that the military will not try to over throw Casrto' s rule. A rebel group of Cuban exiles then try to invade Cuban to stop Castro's rule at the Bay of Pigs. The real fight did not happen for the USA until October 15, 1962 when nuclear missiles are pointed at the USA. -
Cuba joins the Soviet Union
Fidel and the U.S.S.R
Cuba openly stated that they were going to allign themselves with the Soviet Union and the Soviet Unions goverment type, communism. The Soviets soon send ships en route to Cuba carrying missiles. This was to counter act the NATO for setting missiles in Turkey and Italy. Later the Soviets promised to take out the missiles if the US did not invadde Cuba and if the US removed their missiles. -

Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was an attempt to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. The day that they invaded, about 1300 exiles with U.S. weapons, landed at the Bay of Pigs. They intended to cross the island to Havana, but they were stopped by Castro’s army. Within a few hours, 90 exiles were killed and the rest were captured. This increased the tension between the U.S. and Castro. -

Castro announces that Cuba is taking measures that would make any direct U.S. attack on Cuba the equivalent of a world war. He claims that the U.S.S.R. has invested greatly in helping defend his country. Castro is also very angry and upset that President Kennedy decided to put up a blockade towards Cuban an d any ship leaving. Cuba reacts by sending many weapons and men to the shores to try and defend Cuba.

Discovering missiles
On October 17th 1962 USA U-2 spie planes flew over Cuba and discovered that there were at least six medium range ballistic missiles or MRBM on the western partof Cuba. President Kennedy then issued that any missile fired from the western hemisphere would be claimed as an attack from the U.S.S.R against the USA. President Kennedy soon sent out Navy ships that held U-2 spy planes and other planes and jets. There were interesting pictures taken by these U-2's.

Kennedy Sets in Quarintine Line
Time Line The Organization of American States approves of a quarantine line between the United States and Cuba. At the end of the day, a naval quarantine line is set up 800 miles off the coast of Cuba. Also, Khrushchev sends a letter saying "there is a serious threat to peace and security of peoples." As a result of this letter, Kennedy pushes back the line farther off the coast of Cuba. -

Cuban Missile Crisis
One U-2 spy plane accidentally flies into Russia. Another plane is shot down over Cuba. EX-COMM receives a second letter from Khrushchev. It says the U.S. needs to publicly say that they will not invade Cuba. Also, that the U.S. removes its missiles from Turkey. If they do this, then the Russians will remove the missiles. -
Krushchev and Kennedy finally come to agreement
Kennedy agrees to remove missiles from Turkey and Italy if Krushchev removes all missiles from Cuba. Krushchev anounces publically over Radio Moscow that they will be removing all weapons the U.S. sees as "offensive" from Cuba. Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
Nuclear Ban TreatyThis was a Treaty that said both nations could not test nuclear weapons underwater, atmosphere, and space. But they could test nuclear weapons underground as long as no radioactive debris goes out of the nation’s testing border. This was agreed upon to reduce the tension between the two countries after the Cuban Missile Crisis which involved the brink of nuclear war. Also it helped prevent nuclear arms falling into the wrong hands. This ended the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and Russia. -
Soviet Union matches Nuclear Capacity
Cuban Missile after effectsThe Soviet Union was determined to match their nuclear capability with the United States after the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Soviet Union achieved this measure in 1972. Now the Russians have the same capability of nuclear weapons as the United States. The reason being is because of what happened with the Cuban Missile Crisis and after that event, Russia wanted to have the same as the United States. Now if the U.S. tries to attack the Soviet Union, then it will be disastrous consequence for both.
