    Pope Urban II Speech at Clermont
    This all started when Alexius I of the Byzantine Empire asked for help from Pope Urban II to defeat the invading Muslims. Pope Urban II gave a speech at Clermont to call all Christians to go rid the Muslims from the Holy Land. Pope urban II promised all who die fighting the Muslims that their sins and the sins of their family would be forgiven.

    First Crusade

    The leaders of the First Crusade included some of the most distinguished representatives of European knighthood. Count Raymond of Toulouse headed a band of volunteers from Provence in southern France. Godfrey of Bouillon and his brother Baldwin commanded a force of French and Germans from the Rhinelands.

    Antioch is Captured

    In June of 1098 the Christians captured Antioch. There victory was short lived, since they had not yet reached their final destination.

    When the Christians finally captured Jerusalem in July of 1099 they slaughter thousandsand took from the Muslim what was theirs calling it their own.
