Captain James Cook first discovered New South Wales on the 19th of April, 1770. Although he was not he first person to find Australia, he was the first Englishman to discover and survey the East coast. He then claimed it for Great Britain. -

The American War of Independence started in the year 1775. This was the war that ended European control over North and South America. -
First Fleet
The First Fleet of European ships came to Botany Bay in Sydney, Australia in 1788. The UK wanted to get rid of their criminals, as their prisons were over crowded, so they decided to send them to Australia. -
End of Phillip's governorship
Governor Arthur Phillup was made the first Governor of New South Wales in 1788 and finished in 1792. He founded Sydney. -
Hobart is founded
Hobart, the capital city of the state of Tasmania, was founded in 1804. It is the second oldest Australian capital city, after Sydney. -
Brisbane is founded
Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, was founded in 1825. -
Perth is founded
Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, was founded on the 12th of June, in the year of 1829. -
Melbourne founded
John Batman came to Port Phillip Bay from New South wales in search of good land for farming in 1835. He bought some land from the Indigenous chiefs of the tribe that owned it, and later it was called Melbourne. -
Adelaide is founded
Colonel.William Light founded Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, in 1836. -
79,000 free settlers in Australia
By 1840, around 79,000 free settlers had arrived in Australia so far. Many Germans and Italians travelled to the country in the 1840's. -
Irish Potato Famine
The Potato Famine in Ireland occured between 1845 and 1849. Many people from the affected areas migrated to places like the United States, Canada and Australia to get away from the famine. -
GOLD!
Gold was discovered in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland in the 1850's. Many people moved to the gold fields in places like Ballarat and Bendigo, from Melbourne, around Australia and overseas. -
Last Convicts
In 1868, the last convicts were transported to Australia. -
Population Tripled
By the year 1890, the population had almost tripled because of all the free settlers that had come to the country. -
Federation
The six different colonies in Australia joined together in 1901 to form one nation with its own government that would decide matteres that effected the whole country. -
World War 1
Some people came to Australia to get away from the war in 1914. -

World War 1 ended in 1918.
