  • French and indian war

    French and indian war
    This was a seven year war between the natives, french, and Britain. Britain won and gained territories in North America. Britain imposed taxes on colonists to pay for the war.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Followed after the ending of the seven years war. It set territorial limitations of where the colonists can settle. They couldn't settle west of the Appalachians.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    It cut the duty on foreign molasses from six to three pence per gallon. It retained a high duty on foreign refined sugar. It prohibited the importation of all foreign rum.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The British passed this to help pay for the debt caused by the French and Indian war. Colonists had to pay a tax on newspaper, playing cards, and papers. Colonists deemed it as illegal.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Britain passed this to pay for the war. It initiated taxes on glass, paper, lead, paint, and tea. Colonists had no representation so it was illegal to them.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Seven British soldiers fired into a crowd of volatile bostonians. They killed five and wounded six. An african American was shot first during the massacre.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Passed by Parliament to allow tea sales in the American colonies. This gave the East India Company a tax break on their tea. It made tea cheaper than other tea being smuggled into the colonies from other places.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    This was a protest by the Sons of Liberty in December. Sixty colonists threw 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor accumulating to millions in today's money. They did it to oppose the tax on tea. They were getting taxed without representation.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    This was a series of laws passed to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. Laws included the Boston Port Act, Massachusetts Government Act, Impartial Admin of Justice Act, and the Quartering Act. Colonists responded with unity and held the first Continental Congress to discuss an approach to the British.
  • Articles of Confederation

    Articles of Confederation
    This event featured a preamble and thirteen articles that granted the bulk of power to the states. It was the first national frame of government for the United States. It created a national government composed of a Congress which had power to declare wars, appoint military officers, and sign treaties.
