Magnavox Odyssey
The Odyssey had laid the groundwork for many new consoles to come, as it was a unique way to play games from the comfort of your room, while blending ideas from games played in real life. Though not considered commercially successful the odyssey managed to sell 350,000 units from 1972-1975. -
Super Nintendo Entertainment System
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), had seen a new breakthrough in consoles as it ushered players into the next generation of gaming through innovations in advanced graphics, and sound capabilities compared to other popular gaming systems at the time, such as the ‘Saga Genesis.’ The SNES managed to sell 49.10 million units worldwide. -
N64
The N64 was released as the successor to the ‘SNES’ and had a new 64-bit CPU, which aided in its 3D capabilities which separated it from other consoles like Sony’s ‘Playstation.’ Though not as globally successful as its predecessor it still managed to sell 32.93 Million Units worldwide. -
PS2
Sony’s PS2 is the highest selling console of all time with over 160 million copies sold worldwide. The PS2’s dvd compatibility, paired with backwards compatibility for previous models, pc’s and other consoles simply could not compete with its advanced software and graphics. -
GameCube
The Nintendo GameCube was a sixth generation console which served as the successor to the N64, competing with the likes of the PlayStation 2, and the Xbox. The console had been more gaming focused avoiding online services like the Xbox, with an improved controller and a wide array of games in its library. The GameCube was able to sell 21.74 Million Units. -
Xbox360
The Xbox360 served as the successor to the original Xbox, and had been mainly differentiated by its online service service Xbox Live which enabled users to play games online, purchase music, television programs and so much more. The Xbox360 was able to sell 84 Million Units. -
Wii
The Wii was a highly successful console being one of the most sold consoles in a single year, selling 101.63 million units worldwide. What made the Wii so unique was its interactivity with the user, having a Wii nunchuck alongside games like bowling which had the user play like they were actually bowling. -
Xbox One
The Xbox One, sold more than 58 Million Copies worldwide. Although reverting to older PowerPc based architecture, it featured an accelerated processing unit which allowed for faster graphics. In addition to this the controller featured haptic feedback and social networking for which it received praise for. -
Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo switch quickly rose to global stardom with its versatility as a handheld console, as well as a gaming console to play a multitude of games, with two or more players with the new joysticks which were revolutionary at the time. This led to the switch selling over 150 Million units. -
PS5
The PS5 was the highly anticipated sequel to the PS4, selling over 71 Million copies and counting. Including all new and improved graphics with ray-tracing, and 4K resolution displays. The PS5 had also received praise for its dual-sense haptic controller, alongside its adaptive triggers.
