Operation Ark - The purpose of operation Ark was to ensure the long-term survival and sustainability of key native species such as mohua and parakeets which were declining due to the rat and stoat overpopulation
Operation Ark was a flagship multi species protection program. It was launched by The Department of Conservation in 2004 due to rat and stoat overpopulation in South Island beech forests. This project was temporary (2004 - 2010), the only pest eradication action on South Island beech forests at the time making it unique, and it had an outcome of pest eradication and population increase of native species.

  • Taranga (Hen) Island restoration project - The purpose of this project was for native species on the island to increase in population and for the ecosystem to repair after being damaged by kiore.

Taranga (Hen) Island restoration project - The purpose of this project was for native species on the island to increase in population and for the ecosystem to repair after being damaged by kiore.
In May 2011, The Department of Conservation, in partnership with the Ngatiwai Trust Board, launched an operation to eradicate kiore (pacific rats) off Taranga island with an outcome of protecting the many threatened species on the island and protecting the ecosystem. This project was unique as this was the only action happening at that time. It was also temporary with an end date of may 2013.

Giant Wētāpunga/Wētā - Conservation project with the goal of bringing the Giant Weta out of the threat of extinction
The Giant Weta project was initiated by Butterfly Creek, then later in collaboration with Auckland Zoo.
This project is unique in that their were no other organisations before this one with the goal of reviving this dying species. This project was temporary in that once this species was not considered endangered anymore the project was complete.
The final outcome was to save this species from extinction. https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/invertebrates/weta/giant-weta-wetapunga/
  • Great Mercury Island Pest Free

    Great Mercury Island Pest Free
This project was planned by the Island owners who worked with DOC for six months in 2014. This project was unique as this specific island needed pest control eradicating cats and rats. With native species declining, the main deliverable was to enhance the native wildlife and improve the conservation of 'threatened' and 'at risk' plants. This project was successful and Great Mercury Island is now pest-free. https://www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/ahuahu-great-mercury-island/
  • Kākāpō Recovery

    Kākāpō Recovery
This project was planned by the DOC to protect the critically endangered Kākāpō. The project started in 2006 and finished in 2016. The project is unique as no other projects had been implemented before to protect the species. The main deliverable was increasing the Kākāpō population. Which was successful with a record number of Kakapo alive today. https://www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/kakapo-recovery/
  • Silverstream Reserve Conservation

    Silverstream Reserve Conservation
The purpose of this project is to revegetate 1.5 hectares of the south bank of Silverstream in Clarkville, Canterbury. Local volunteers, Clarkville student volunteers and the Waimakariri District Council executed this project. This project’s main objective is to manage the planting of a mixture of native trees and plants to help restore the stream and its surroundings. Which will provide nesting sites and food for native species. This project was completed during the Winter of 2019.

The involvement of DOC, iwi, scientists and tourism operators are executing this project. This project’s main objective is to restore the parks rich native bush and wildlife to a self-sustainable level, by reducing predator numbers and restoring forests and releasing native species. This is a 30 year project that should be completed by 2042.

Predator Free 2050 - An ambitious project of saving New Zealands native species of animals and plants from introduced predators and pests
This project is a government owned organisation. This is unique in that they have the very ambitious goal of eradticating all pests/predators from NZ, this project in temporary in that they have a solid set completion time being 2050.
