The Sugar Act was important because the British passed taxes on Sugar and Molasses. The US was not happy to have to give their money to the British. -

The British was passing as many taxes as they could because of their debt. They wanted to take money from the American people. The US didn't think it was fair to have to give their money to the British if they didn't even live in England. -

This was a street fight between colonists and the British soldiers. The colonists didn't have any weapons so they used rocks and sticks and snowballs as defense. Many colonists died and they realized things were getting out of hand. -
The Boston Tea Party
The colonist protested 13 years of taxes by boarding 3 ships in Boston Harbor. They threw 90,000 lbs of tea into the water. It pushed the two sides closer to war. -

This was a meeting of delegates of 12 of the 13 members of the Continental Congress. This was important because the states were working together to form a plan against the British. -

This is a very important event because George Washington led our country to freedom from the British. He went on to become our country's first president. -
Congress Adopts the Declaration of Independence
This declared that we were free and separate from the British. They could not tax us unfairly anymore. We were independent and our own country. -
Articles of Confederation Adopted
This legalized our independence from England. It was the first constitution of the United States. -
French Fleet drives British Naval Force from Chesapeake Bay
This was a crucial battle in the war for independence. The British attempted to sail into the Chesapeake, but were unsuccessful. -
US Constitution Signed
This is the supreme law of the United States of America. The colonist knew they needed a strong government, but also needed protection from their own government. The Constitution was written to bring the states together to create a perfect union.
