    King Philip's War

    King Philip's War was an armed conflict between New England colonist and their Indian allies. The colonists tried to convert the Indians to English culture. Metacomet led attacks on settlements in retaliation for this intrusion on Wampanoag land. They could destroyed a number of English settlements but eventually ran out of food. The colonists devastated the tribes, selling many into slavery in the West Indies. This marks the end of the Native American presence among the New England colonists.

    Pontiac's Rebellion

    An Indian uprising after the French and Indian War, led by an Ottawa chief named Pontiac. They opposed British expansion into the western Ohio Valley and began destroying British forts in the area. The attacks ended when Pontiac was killed and Indians came to a peace agreement, which led to the British control of the land. The long-term effect was, it caused the British to seek more peaceful relations with Natives to slow their own expansion into the Ohio Valley region.

    Occupation of Alcatraz

    Group of Red Power activists called the Indian of All Tribes occupied the abandoned federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco bay in order to protest the government's treatment of Natives (such as the violation of the Treaty of Fort Laramie) and ended when the Indians were forcibly removed by the fed gov. The occupation of Alcatraz Island served as a strong symbol and uniting force for indigenous peoples everywhere because of the importance the island held in their ancestors' lives.
