Six-Day War
Egypt demanded that the UN remove its troops from Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula. Egyptian troops then moved into the Sinai, and Egypt began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba, Israel's route to the Red Sea. Israel decided to strike first. -
Yom Kippur War
Determined to win their territory back Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur War, a suprise attack against Israel in 1973. -
Camp David Accords
Egyptian president Anwar Sadat made a momentous declaration: Egypt wanted peace with Israel. -
Intifada
In 1987 Palestinian resentment of Israeli occupation boiled over into a rebellion. During the Intifada, Palestinian youths battled Israeli troopa in widespread street violence. -
Second Intifada
In 2000 a second intifada began. This time, Palestinian youths were joined by Palestinian security forces with guns. Hamas sent suicide bombers into Israel to attack civilians. Israelis sent troops with tanks, fighter jets, and helicopter gunships into cities in the West Bank and Gaza.
