    Since the late 1800s, the Jewish Nationalist movement known as Zionism had been growing, and more Jews began to call for an independent state in their ancient homeland. With the horrors of the Holocaust revealed to the world after WWII, the British Mandate gave up control of the mandate to the United Nations. WIth the UN sympathetic the the Zionist cause, the birth of the democratic State of Israel was declared on May 14, 1948.

    When Egypt closed off Israel's route to the red sea, Israel expected a large-scale Arab attack. Fearing this, Israel decided to strike first, launching the air strikes that began the Six Day War. Israel ground troops defeated Arab forces, taking control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

    Determined to gain back their lost land, Arab forces launched a surprise attack on Israel. There attack landed on the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur. At first, Arab troops rapidly gained grounds. However, once Israel had a chance to get their feet under themselves, and with US support, Israeli forces pushed back the Arabs. After weeks of deadly stale-mate, a ceasse-fire was agreed to.
  • Camp David Accords

    In 1977, Egypt announced that they (Egypt) wanted peace with Israel. With this big announcement, US president Jimmy Carter invited the president of Egypt and the Israeli prime minister to his presidential retreat in Maryland called Camp David. The Egypt and Israeli agreement known as the Camp David Accords ended ovewr 30 years of violence.
  • Intifalda

    While Egypt and Israel made peace, Palestinian tension was growing.On the West Bank and Gaza, Israeli settlements were sprouting up everywhere.Palestinian resentment to these settlements boiled over into an event known as the first Intifalda. During the Intifalda, Palestinian youths battled Israeli troops in widespread street violence. Peace wasn't reached until the early 1990s.
