At first, Arab troops made gains in the war. Israels government, led by Golda Meir, was not fully prepared for the attack and needed support from the U.S.

    Until the late 1970s no Arab nation had recognized Israel's right to exist. then, in 1977, Egyptian president Anwar Sadat made a momentous declaration: Egypt wanted peace with Israel. to help facilitate this historic peace, U.S. president Jimmy Carter invited Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin to Camp David. There, Sadat and Begin reached an agreement known as the Camp David Accords.

Israel responded with strong military and police resistance, but the fighting continued until the early 1990s

    Palestinian youths were joined by Palestinian security forces with guns. Hamas sent suicide bombers into Israel to attack civilians. the Israelis countered by sending troops back by tanks, fighter jets, and helicopter gunships into cities in the west bank and Gaza.
