PLO chairman won election as President

Israel assassinated Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, co-founder of Hamas in Gaza city, successor Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi was too killed in a missile strike. Mahmoud Abbas succeeded him as PLO chairman and won election as President on platform of hating violence and making peace with Israel.

Arab-Israel ceasefire

In 2005 Sharon and Abbas announced a ceasefire (with Abbas persuading militant factions to observe an informol calm at least until the end of 2005). Violence subsides, Israel completed anevacuation of 15,000 Jewish settlers from Gaza.
