Charlottetown Conference
-The conference was intended to discuss maritime interests.
-Upper and Lower Canadaian Delegates requested an inuitation to speak about the possibillities of a union of the british North American colonies.
-Lasted over a week.
-Meeting of the leaders of the three maritime provinces. -
Quebec Conference
-John A Macdonald of Upper Canada favoured a legislative union.
-People from Lower Canada insisted on control over language, religion and civil law.
-Comprimising a federal system, so each province could have it's own in legislature, and powers were divided between the federal and provincial governments. -
London Conference
-Canadian delegation departed for Britain to obtain aproval for a canadian confederation.
-London was the last of maritime conferences that lasted for the delegates.
-Macdonald was the master parliamentarian. -
Quebec Joined Confederation
-Britain had stopped giving the colonies preference.
-The colonies had big tariifs on trading with eachother, and confederation would end that.
-Confederation would enable the colonies to fight off invasion. -
Ontario Joined Confederation
-The leaders agreed that connecting with the other colonies would help to make the economy stronger.
-The colonies were running out of money.
-People in Ontario, including John A. Macdonald, wanted to form a new country with the other British colonies. -
Nova Scotia Joined Confederation
-Had a close trading relationship with New England.
-Newer industries of manufactoring and the railway were beggining to come up more.
-Major political parties were the Conservatives and Liberals. -
New Brunswick Joined Confederation
-English Descent made up the majority of the population.
-The colony of New Brunswick is a responsible government.
-Many thought the US was powerful enough to expand northward, into New Brunswick. -
Manitoba Joined Confederation
-They needed the money from the government so their province can be more stable.
-They needed support from the federal government.
-The Metis promised land, -
North-West Territories Joined Confederation
-The Hudson's Bay Company sold their lands to the Canadian Government.
-Most people are Inuit, or First Nations.
-People were allowed to vote for all the council members that govern the North-West Territories. -
British Comumbia Joined Confederation
-Gold was found in the Fraser River.
-Gold brought thousands of new settlers to colonies on Vancouver Island.
-The people in British Columbia wanted to be able to make their own decisions and elect their own government. -
Prince Edward Island Joined Confederation
-Canada was afraid of them joining america so they asked them to join.
-They had lots of power with the united states, they didnt want to lose it.
-They accepted to become apart of Canada because they offered to help buy land from British landowners. -
Yukon Joined Confederation
-Gold was discovered, Canada sent the North West Mounted Police, to prove they owned the area.
-Population was growing fast, the gold rush attracted the Americans, and they feared of America taking over. -
Alberta Joined Confederation
-Many people came to work in the industries.
-They couldn't afford some things people needed, for example, schooling.
-Federick Haultain decided that it would be a good idea to have the same government as the other provinces. -
Saskatchewon Joined Confederation
-Famous for good farming, logging, mining, and the
railway industries.
-Once was apart of the Territories and Alberta.
-Population was increasing fast. -
Newfoundland&Labrador Joined Confederation
-The people were divided between a colony of Britain, and being Canadian.
-Canada offered to help pay for the roads and help with the colony.
-Britain was done with putting effort into helping Newfoundland.
-Joey Smallwood convinced the poeple to vote, in order to join Canada. -
Nunuvut Joined Confederation
-The Inuit people wanted control and the resources of the Arctic.
-Gained control of the land and joined to Canada.
-Decisions had been made about Confederation and the use of their lands.
