-Under the British mercantile system colonies were considered to be sources of raw materials and markets for manufactured goods made in Great Britian
-Goods such as timber and wheat from British North American colonies were sold in Britian with lower tariffs than other goods from other countries
-The mercantile system contributed to the prosperity of those in the colonies who were involved in the export of raw materials -
Reciprocity Treaty
-the British North American colonies trade raw materials and agricultural products with the united states without traiffs being chrged on these goods
-it was difficult to trade because the transportation was lacking reliblity

Gold Rush on the Lower Fraser River
-The Hudson Bay Company had purchased over 20 Kilograms of gold
-The first big strike of paydirt below the rapids on the Fraser River was made by a small group who had come up from California
-Miners came from all over to get the riches -
US Explansion
-The united states erupted into civil war over whether slavery should be legal in the US
-The North was opposed to slavery for economic as well as moral reasons
-The war increased tensions between the Union and British North America -
Charlottetown Conference
-they wanted to discuss a maritime union based on their common intersts as a maritime region
-the United Province of Canada decided to take advantage of the meeting by trying to convince the Alantic colonies to join with them in a larger union -
Quebec Conference
-The representatives from the united province of Canada and all the maritime colonies and Newfoundland attended the conference
-at the end they had a list called the seventy-two resolutions
-Canada the new country was to be bulit on the basic of seventy-two resolutions -
The London Conference
- During the meeting, the delegates from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were able to make some changes that was their benefit -New Brunswick was sure they were going to get the intercolonical railway to be built -Subslides in the provincal government was increased

The British North America Act
-they created the Dominion of Canada
- the candians felt if Quebec didn't have a provincal government then they would lose their identity
- Each provincial government would handle matters affecting only the people within its boundaries -
Confederation (Ontario,Quebec,New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia)
-They joined they helped build railways and help them with their markets and more
-Bring the colonies closer and make the econamy stronger
-They also knew if they joined Canada then they will be safer because they knew U.S will fight aganist them
