    • increased the tension between the Union and BNA and almost went to war because of an inident when the Americans captured 2 represenatives of the Confederacy
    • this was another factor the made British North American poloticians think about joining the colonies to form a single country

    • Maritime colonies had a conference to talk about the idea of a Maritime union
    • The united province of canada and newfoundland were not invited
    • The Canadians convinced the Maritime colonies to join a union with the Canadas

    • Newfoundland attended the conference
    • met for 3 weeks and figured out how to share the powers in this new country
    • at the end of the conference the delegates voted for the Quebec Resolutions which had details on how the country will work

    • The king and Queen had no power in the government of Canada so the monarchy stayed a symbol
    • Canada controled internal affairs while Britian controled foreign policy

    • Sir John A. Macdonald dedicated his life into making Canada a prosperous and united nation
  • The Purchase of Rupert's Land

    • HBC agreed to sell Rupert's Land to the government of Canada
    • the area included northern Ontario and Quebec, all of Manitoba, most of Saskatchewan, southern Alberta, parts of Northewest Territories and Nunavut
    • John A. Macdonald appointed William McDougall to make a new government in the Red River Settlement

    • Canada passed the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the 5th Canadian province
    • some terms it contained was that they are to speak Engish and French, Protestant and Catholic school pays were to be seperate and the federal government had control over lands and resources
    • such a small area that is had a nickname "postage stamp province"

    • The Prime Minister was anxious to expand Canada from sea to sea so B.C became Canada's 6th province
    • Federal government promised within 10 years a railway would be built form Ontario to the Pacific Ocean
