IBM System/360
Gene Amdahl creator of the IBM System/360 started his very own company. The 470V/6 was the company's first product, and competed with the IBM System370 computers. The 470V/6, however, was smaller, faster, and cost less. -
Atari 400 and 800 microcomputers
Atari designs two microcomputers, the Model 400 and Model 800. While the 400 model was mainly a game console, the 800 was more used as a home computer. Both of the products we in competition with the Apple ll, commodore PET, and TRS-80 computers. -
Commodore Home Computer
Commodore comes out with a home computer, VIC-20, after the Commodore PET personal computer. Because the VIC-20 was cheaper, it sold more than one million units. This was the first computer to break that threshold. -
The Game Boy
The Game Boy was released, which was a handheld game console from the company, Nintendo. It had removable game cartridges, and became popular from its new release, Tetris. More the 100 million were sold, making it a top selling gaming system. -
IBM 9345 Hard Disk Drive
Codename was known as "Sawmill". It was the first hard disk drive to ever use magneto-resistive heads. The IBM 9345 had a benefit over it's rivals since the bits could be stored more closely together, due to the magneto-resistive heads. The first model consisted of a 5 1/4 inch disk drive and two 1 GB hard disk assemblies. The second model had two 1.5 GB hard disk assemblies. -
Wifi Enters Homes
The IEEE 802.11b, a short-range radio networking standard is renamed "Wi-Fi" by Wi-Fi Alliance. Apple then released their "Airport" Wi-Fi router and Wi-Fi connectivity is installed into new Macs. These and many other products help publicize cable free connections in different locations; such as, cafes, at work, and at home. -
First Camera Phone
Japan's Softbank introduces the J-Phone J-SHOY, which is the first digital camera. The camera contains .11 megapixels, a 245-color display, and photos can now be shared wirelessly. This J-Phone would soon lead to the development of the first flip phone. -
Blue-ray Optical Disc
This disc was designed to store high definition video at 1080p, while DVD's were only capable of 480p. It was originally named for the short wavelength blue laser that reads the data on disc; because DVD's were read using a red laser. This blue laser was used to read data stored at a higher density compared to the red laser. -
Nintendo Wii (Significant to Victoria)
The Wii introduced interacting games. It used gesture recognition into gaming, using sensor technology for users. Some of the interacting games included Wii Fit, Wii Tennis and Wii Boxing. Nintendo sold more than 100 million units worldwide. The Wii was an important invention for me, because it was the first game console my siblings and I played with, and it was a way for us not to fight. -
Siri Is Created (Signifcant to Brooke)
When the IPhone 4S was created, Apple built in a voice activated assistant known as, Siri. Siri could perform tasks and find many different pieces of information across the web. Siri was an important invention to me because it allowed me to navigate and find information quicker; such as, local restaurants, directions, weather forecasts,sports scores.
