  • HP-85 (Project Capricorn)

    HP-85 (Project Capricorn)
Hewlett Packard introduces a microcomputer with 16KB of RAM and 32KB ROM. The computer has a five inch CRT display, tape drive, built in printer, and keyboard. The computer retailed for $3,250.00 and weighed twenty pounds. This portable computer was a step in innovation to more advanced portable systems.
  • Xerox 8010 Information System

    Xerox 8010 Information System
The Xerox 8010 was developed by David Liddle and included bitmapped display, icons, folders, a two button mouse, file/print servers, as well as email. The graphical user interface made this computer more user friendly, but was mostly designated for office use. This model inspired future Apple computer designs such as the Lisa and Macintosh and several Microsoft Windows features.
  • The Lisa

    The Lisa
Apple releases the first commercial computer with a GUI, the Lisa. The graphical user interface made it easier for consumers to navigate and use the computer. Icons, cursors, and buttons were enhanced with sounds and visual effects such as color change/transparency. Steve Job's first daughter was named Lisa. It is speculated that the computer was named after her, and then given another meaning (Locally Integrated Software Architecture). The Lisa was invented by Steve Wozniak and Ken Rothmuller.
  • Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)

    Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
The GIF was invented by Steve Wilhite and introduced to the world via CompuServe. A GIF can be made from a part of a video clip or display animated graphics or images. Fun Fact: GIF is pronounced "Jiff." GIFs are another way to communicate ideas or feelings visually.
  • ISP "The World"

    ISP "The World"
The first commercial internet service provider known as, "The World," began servicing customers in 1989. The ability to have internet access in a private residence has shaped the world as we know it. Barry Shein is credited with bringing "The World" to the public market.
