World Wide Web Invented
Tim Berners-Lee develops what he calls the "WorldWideWeb" which combines a server, HTML, URLs, and the first browser. His hope is that individuals can use it to add content and connect with one another. It is perhaps the most significant invention of the 1990's and his vision has come true. -
JPEG Standards Created
A group called the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) creates standards for photo compression which finds a balance between photo quality and file size. This leads to the .jpg format which is still the most popular and widely used by digital cameras today. -
MQ-1 Predator Drone
The MQ-1 Predator Drone is an unmanned plane equipped with cameras and the ability to drop missiles. It uses computer technology to accurately hit targets remotely. -
Palm Pilot
The Palm 1000 and 5000 were created by Ed Colligan, Donna Dubinsky, and Jeff Hawkins. They used a Motorola microprocessor running at 16MHz and could be connected to a laptop or desktop. They were the first widely used handheld devices. -
Advances in Cell Phones
Celluar phones become more advanced and include features such as GPS, MP3 music capability, and predictive text messaging. Some cell phones were able to use an internal antenna.
