    an attempt to maintain international peace and security and to achieve cooperation on economic, social, and humanitarian problems
  • Truman Doctrine

    The principle that the U.S. should give support to countries/peoples under threat of soviet union/communism in order to stop spread of communism
  • Hollywood 10

    10 members of the Hollywood film industry denounced tactics employed by HUAC, an investigative committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, during its investigation of alleged communist influence in the American motion picture business
  • Marshall plan

    The plan that proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe. the US gave Europe $13.3 billon in order to support the reconstruction and also mainly to convince them to stay/ become non-communist
  • Korean war

    a war fought between north and south Korea between 1950 and 1953. The USSR supported North Korea which was communist and the US-backed South Korea which was not communist. the war was started by north Korea after tension over koran peninsula
  • Space race

    the first American to orbit Earthrace between US and USSR to achieve superior space cabaliltys and land someone on the moon. NASA was created in order to build and send rockets. the soviet union created and sent up sputnik-1 the first artificial earth satellite. Yuri Gagarin became the first person to orbit Earth due to the Luna-2 by the soviet union. America won the space race by apollo 8 adding on the moon and Neil Armstrong being the first man on the moon.
  • Bay of pigs

    Failed 3-day attack by US CIA whose plan was to push Cuba leader Fidel Castro from power. they were trying to remove Castro due to him being a communist. The CIA gave 1,200 Cuban exiles weapons in the hope it would rally Cuban citizens to rise up and overthrow Castro.
  • Berlin wall goes up

    the communist east germany created a concrete wall with barbed wire separating west and east Germany due to west Germany being non-communist. the purpose was to undermine the socialist state and prevent west "Fascists" from entering east Germany
  • U.S. officially enters Vietnam war

    The U.S. officially entered the Vietnam war in order to prevent a communist takeover. They were afraid of the spread of communism to south vietnam and then the rest of Asia. They sent money, weapons, soldiers, etc to help south Vietnam. The U.S. failed due to both Vietnams uniting under the communist banner. 58,220 U.S. soldiers died during the war
  • Soviets invade afghanistan

    The soviets invaded Afghanistan for the purpose of supporting the local pro-soviet government that had been installed during Operation Storm-333. The soviets also invaded under the Brezhnev Doctrine.
  • Berlin wall comes down

    during the night crowds of germans began dismantling the wall because they wanted Germany to reunify. the wall coming down was due to reforms in soviet bloc and confusion over an East German directive to open the border
  • NATO formed

    NATO was formed to secure Europe, protect freedoms, and promote cooperation after the end of WW2. The 12 founding countries were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
