COMMUNICATION! IT OWES ALOT TO TECHNOLOGY!
-
Amsterdam-Niewediep Telegraph Connected
link GETTING CONNECTED!
THE TELEGRAPH! Although it was invented in the 1830's it is slowly connecting geographicly seperated places. Technology such as this is increasing the quickness of communication between people that before would have had to send a messenger, a letter, or go visit someone after a great amount of travel. More efficient, less time consuming, cheaper way of communicating across great distances. -
New York Times is founded.
link
Organizational communication doesn't just exist for companies and corporations. But also for the everyday person. The mass production of the New York Times allows people to stay current on events. The news is very important to people to share ideas and goals. -
Lond-Paris Telegraph Connected!

Another telegraph connected even more people that are spacially challenged!? Already stated before that the telegraph is making our world smaller but who doesn't like more evidence? -
Panama Railway Connects the Oceans
link
Also known as the inter-oceanic railroad, the Panama Railways enables the quicker travel of goods, people, and resources from one side of the world to the other. -
First Oil Well
link
First oil well drilled in Pennsylvania by Edwin Drake. Unknowing to him, this eventually leads to an oil boom which paves the way for other technologies such as engines. We all know that without engines we wouldn't have the ease of sending goods and information as we do today. -
First Oil Pipeline
link
Oil, so important to technology tht it deserves to be mentioned twice. I wonder if these men ever imagined that oil would lead to combustable engines which allow for faster travel of post mail, and person to person communication. -
Web Off-set Printing
link
Being able to feed paper on a continuous roll and print both sides at the same time greatly increased the number of news papers that could be created and delivered to customers! This also lowers the price making it less of a luxury and more so a commodity. -
Pneumatic Subway
link
Although very limited at the time, this technology is later expanded into what modern day subways look like. Now people in large cities have a cheap, reliable mode of transportation. -
The First Type Writer
link
This great invention not only made written communication look neater, it was much quicker than print and caligraphy and also easy to use! -
Mimeograph
link
Although not what one would think of these days as a copy machine. This little device invented by Thomas Edison was able to make duplicate copies of documents. I would say this is pretty time saving for organizations, espescially in meetings where it is beneficial for everyone to be 'on the same page'. -
TELEPHONE!
link
In my opinion, this is when communication began to make leaps forward. The ability of sharing communication via voice over great distances is so incredibly great! In 'real time' too! No longer are people having to wait on the newspaper to find out information! -
Phonograph
image
This device, invented by a group of engineers in New Jersey and Thomas Edison, is able to record sounds and transmissions. The first ever recorded message is one we all know! "Mary had a little lamb, it's fleece was white as snow." -
Faster Than the Eye Photography
link
Enjoy your movies? Well, Eadweard Muybridge is the man to thank for them! First person to take photographs quickly enough that when 'played' or viewed one after another at high speeds looked similar to what we think of modern day videos. -
Incandescent Ligh Bulb
link
We all hate working late. However, thakns to another great invention by Thomas Edison our bosses can have us stay as late as they want! The incadescent bulb uses relatively little energy and is very cheap. Although not directly effecting communication it does allow us to do so at night. -
Kinetoscope
link
Getting even closer to what modern day movie projectors, Thomas Edison (is there anything this guy can't do?), invents the kinetoscope which brought 46 images per second to a viewers eye. -
The CAR!
link
You want to talk about an invention that revolutionized communication.... and just about everything else? Lets talk horse power.... minus the actual horses. The car made such signigant changes to every aspect of american life. Expanded the trading business and allowed for written communications to be delivered at speeds never seen before! Not to mention the nice drives in the country side! -
Magnetic Recordings
link
Magnetic recordings, invented by Valdemar Poulsen, allow us to store large amounts of data on disks (think your hard drive) and early music devices such as cassette tapes and VHS tapes. Thank you Mr. Poulsen for allowing my entertainment as a child to exist! -
Radio Transmission
link
Reginald Fessenden invented the first wireless communication device. Although in 1900 his work was only beginning it was the catalyst for the way we mass communicate today using things such as satellite television, cell phones, GPS. Without him we might still be takling on a phone with cords attached to it.
