Chiefs across the states begin to discuss the development of common core standards during CCSSO's (COuncil of Chief State School Officers) Annual Policy Forum in CIncinatti, Ohio.

Launch of Common Core Standards
The Common Core Standards were first introduced by the NGA (National Governors Association) and CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers).

Why was it developed?
State education standards have been around since the1990s. And by the 2000s, every state had developed and adopted its own learning standards that specify what grades 3-8 and high school should be able to do. But every state had its own definition of proficiency, so it was because of this lack of standarization through out the nation, that common core was first thought of and then created. -
Common Core Development Process Announced
A month after it was introduced, the Common Core State Standards initiative also announced its developers, publicizing two groups to help develop the standards. A work group for people working on the development and a feedback group that provide information and research to back the standards.

Kentucky Adopts the Common Core Standards
Kentucky became the first state to adopt the common core in 2010 and began implementing its standards in the 2011-2012 school year.
