Birth of modern Singapore
Stamford Raffles arrived in Singapore with William Farquhar. Reconginizing the potential of Singapore, he negotiated a trade with local rulers and made Singapore a trading station. Singapore's policy of free trade started to attract merchants from many different countries. -
Singapore becomes part of British colony
Singapore's status as a British's possession was formalized by two treaties. One was Anglo-Dutch treaty and the other one was made with Sultan Hussein and Temenggong Abdu'r Rahman in August. -

Japanese military police kills many people
Japanese military police, Kempeitai killed about 25,000 to 50,000 people during Sookching Massacre. They killed anyone whom they perceived as anti-japanese. During the Japanese colonization, Singapore was renamed syonan which means light of thes south. Japanese also established schools and educated singaporeans in Japanese. -
Japan surrenders
After Japan surreders, Brtish did not turn to Singapore immediately so Singapore was in chaos. About two months after the surrender of Japan, Singapore was officially returned to British. -
