The Africans beyond the Sahara began trading with the Europeans. Eventually the Europeans got involved in Slave trades. After that they gained control of most of the continent. -
1500
Atlantic Slave Trade
The Europeans greatly increased the impact of slave trade on Africa. The Atlantic slave trade may have involved as many as 13,000,000 slaves. -
Colonization
The slave trade was mostly outlawed in the early 1800 but, the European interference in Africa continued. By the early 1800s European powers actively began to colonize Africa. -
Independence
Many Africans resented having little or no control over their government. As these Africans became educated leaders emerged, they became frustrated with the unfair rule of colonel powers. -
Conflicts in Sudan
Sudan gained independence in 1956. Southerns rebelled against Northern rule.
