Magna Carta
Royal Charter of rights agreed to by King John of England. Stated that everyone is subject to the law, even the king. -
James Town Settlement
Settles by the Virginia Company of England. 1st permanent British settlement in North America. -
Mayflower Compact (written)
Created laws for Mayflower Pilgrims and non-pilgrims for the new colony. Established that the colonists would create one society and work together to further it. -
Petition of Rights
A document setting out specific individual protections under the state. Sent by English parliament to Charles I. Initiated by Sir Edward Coke. Charles granted subsidies. He continued to ignore parliament and not listen to the rules. -
English Bill Of Rights
Signed by William III and Mary II, after overthrow of King James II. It outlined specific constitutional and civil rights. This gave parliament power of the monarchy. This created a constitutional monarchy. Reflects the ideals of John Locke -
Albany Plan of Union
The Albany Plan was a plan to create a unified government for the thirteen colonies. This failed as the colonies were afraid of losing their autonomy. -
Stamp Act
Act of GB parliament that imposed a direct tax on the British Colonies. This required that colonies printed material be produced on stamped paper produced from London. Had to have a tax stamp, Distributors collected the tax in exchange for the stamp. This lead to boycott, riots, and attacks -
Boston Massacre
British soldiers shot and killed several while being harassed by a mob in Boston. Publicized by people such as Paul Revere and Samuel Adams -
Boston Tea Party
Political and mercantile protest by the sons of liberty. Tea was boycotted. -
Intolerable Acts
Laws passed by the British parliament after the Boston Tea Party. They were to punish the colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party.
Boston port act, Massachusetts government act, administration of justice act, quartering act, Quebec act. -
1st continental congress
Was comprised by the delegates of the colonies. They met in reaction to the coercive act. -
American Revolution begins
Ideological and political revolution. The resulted in colonial independence from Britain. -
Second continental congress.
This represents America's first real attempt at representative self-governance, with it being the governing body of the American colonies -
Decleration of Independence
The declaration severed ties with Great Britain. This stated the reasons why the colonies wanted independence -
Shay's rebellion
Armed uprising in western Massachusets. This was in response to the debt crisis and increased taxes. -
Philadelphia Convention
The Convention met to address the problems of the weak central government that existed under the Articles of Confederation.
