The Enlightenment

Deism: "The idea that the universe was created by god then abandoned; no supernatural controls would be exerted and all things were explainable by reason."
Enlightenment philosphy stated the human reason was good enough to solve their own problems, faith was not as imporantant.
Imporant writers include Isaac Newton, John Locke, and REne Descartes. -
Great Awakening
Occured from 1720's-1740's
A series of religious revivals that occured in the colonies.
The New England colonies were greatly effected by the Great Awakening.
Implied equality between God and the Bible
Preachers spread the message that faith was a way to avoid hell.
More sects of Christianity were created.
Several colleges were formed by those who accepted the Great Awakening, such as Princeton, Brown, and Rutgers. -

Albany Plan
Delegates of Seven Colonies met in New York in order to talk about plans for collective defense.
Benjamin Franklin's plan for intercolonial government was rejected as the colonial legislature believed to much power would be surrendered.
Even though no support was given to Franklin's plan, it was important for the idea of uniting against a common enemy.
