Roanoke
The colony of Roanoke was the first English colony in the new world. Sir Walter Raleigh founded it with some settlers, but the did not do well. Those colonist left with Sir Francis Drake. John White tried again to settle the area with some colonist, but When John left and returned a few years later, the colony was gone.

Jamestown
A group of about 100 settlers came to Jamestown. At first it looked like it would be a failure because of famine, disease, and conflict with the Native Americans. Due to tobacco and a period of peace with the natives Jamestown grew as a settlement.

Great Migration
Some English citizens wanted to separate from the church of England. These people moved to Holland where they could be free to worship whatever they want. They worried that their kids wouldn't grow up with English customs, so they moved to America.

Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
The mayflower was a ship that was pushed off its intended course by rough water. The settlers decided to name where they landed Plymouth. They received help from the natives and celebrated the first Thanksgiving. The mayflower compact was signed by 41 settlers to make certain everyone abides by the laws established under the government.

New York
Peter Minuit along with others founded New York on Manhattan Island. It exported natural resources and iron products. New York was known for its farming. Wheat was its main crop.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
About 1,000 puritans came from England to present day Massachusetts to establish a colony. The colony did not allow religious freedom. People who had other religions were banished. The charter was annulled after the colony stopped communication with England. A new charter was put in place with royal government.

Maryland
George Calvert and some other settlers came to America and settled Maryland. Its main purpose was to act as a refuge for Catholics from England. The colony was known for iron works, shipbuilding, and agriculture.

Connecticut
A Dutch explorer named Adriaen Block explored the area of Connecticut. A trading post becomes the town of Windsor. John Oldham establishes a settlement named Wethersfield. Windsor, Wethersfield, and a settlement called Hartford joined together to form the colony of Connecticut.

Rhode Island
Roger Williams founded Rhode Island after being banished from Massachusetts for supporting religious tolerance. He purchased the land from Native Americans in the area. Newport, a city in Rhode Island, was a major center for shipping and trade.

House of Burgesses
Elected representatives met in Virginia to make decisions for the colonies. Each county sent at most two representatives. Some sent only one. Famous people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were a involved in the house of burgesses.

Maryland Toleration Act
The Maryland Toleration Act gave religious freedom to Maryland's inhabitants. Back in England everyone was forced to follow the church of England. Many of the Maryland Settlers wanted to separate religion and government, so that they could worship freely.

Carolina
Eight men were given the rights to the Carolina lands by King Charles II. They settled it, making it one of the colonies. The warm weather of Carolina made it possible to farm throughout the whole year. Slavery was common on the plantations.

Bacon's Rebellion
Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion in order to defend against Native Americans. He led a militia and led them on expeditions. Bacon was elected into the House of Burgesses. When Bacon died of disease the rebellion was put to an end.

Pennsylvania
William Penn and some quakers came to America and founded the colony of Pennsylvania. They were looking for trade and religious freedom. A main crop for Pennsylvania was wheat which was made into flour and shipped to England.

Salem Witch Trials
Two girls started to act weird. They were diagnosed with bewitchment. Three women were accused of being witches. One woman named Tituba confessed of being a witch. After this incident many more women were being accused of being witches. Some witches were hanged and some died in jail.

Salutary Neglect
Salutary Neglect was the British policy of not enforcing the trade laws in the Colonies. They wanted to focus more of their attention on European politics. This allowed the colonies to trade with people of than the British so that they could prosper.

The Enlightenment was about using science and reason to come to conclusions rather than blind faith. It inspired free-thinkers to observe the world for answers. The Great Awakening was a religious response to the enlightenment. It pushed religious ideas such as by accepting Christ, you can be saved.

Albany Plan
Seven of the American Colonies of the British made the first proposal to be united under one government called the Albany Plan. The English officials wanted to make a treaty between all the colonies and the Iroquois. The French and Indian war was starting up and the colonies needed to unite.

French-Indian War
The French and Indian War was between the French and the British. The British won the war and gained land from it. However, the war was expensive for the colonies of England, and the increased taxes on the colonies made the colonies more angry toward England.

Proclamation of 1763
The proclamation of 1763 was made to ensure Native Americans that the settlers would not encroach on their lands. All land west of the Appalachian Mountains would go to the natives. Also, only licensed traders could travel west to trade with the natives.
