Roanoke
Roanoke, or as it is often referred to as, the lost colony, was settled in August of 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh. The settlement is in current day North Carolina. The first settlers of Roanoke struggled in the beginning, and John White discovered that the whole colony was gone after returning from England with more supplies. the cause of the mysterious disappearance is unknown, but they had little recourses and a strong Native American presence in the area. -
Jamestown
This was a colony founded in Virginia. this was the fist permanent settlement. It paved the way for the rest of America. The expedition was sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, which was a group trying to make a profit off the exploration. One man died on the voyage over, but many died the first winter because of bad conditions and lack of supplies. House of Burgesses
Spain and France both had very different ways to run their government. Spain and France had absolute monarchies, while Britain had a limited monarchy. English Kings in the colonies decided they had the power to choose how they wanted to run their government. They decided to stay true to their English ways, and they created their own representative assemblies. Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower was just a small ship that carried over 100 people and all of their possessions for 66 days. This was a very dangerous voyage because of many problems on the ocean. There was a lot of sickness, but only one person died. They finally arrived on Cape Cod and began to build the settlement of Plymouth. New York
This was one of the original colonies found on the Atlantic coast of the U.S. New York was part of the middle colonies. It was founded by the Duke of York and some other colonists on Manhattan island. Great Migration
A time when Puritan Englishmen migrated to New England, the Indies, and Chesapeake. The migration to Massachusetts only included a couple hundred Pilgrims, and a lot of emigrants. They migrated in order to obtain religious freedom. England was very harsh on some religions, especially if they were nonconformists, so they migrated to America. -
Massachusetts Bay Colony
One of the original 13 colones, Massachusetts was founded by a group of about 1000 Puritans. They received a charter from King Charles to trade and colonize in New England. The main reason for leaving England was to escape the church and persecution and create a more pure style of religion for everybody. -
Maryland
Maryland was founded by a group of colonists like, George Calvert and Lord Baltimore. It was one of the original 13 colonies ans was located on the Atlantic coast. Maryland stayed a colony until they joined the other 12 in the rebellion against England so they could finally become their own state. Shipbuilding and trade was a huge part of Maryland being located right on the water. -
Rhode Island
Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams. He promised Religious freedom, so many people came from Massachusetts, and it was one of the most Liberal colonies. This was home to the first baptist church, and they accepted quakers. Rhode Island was also the first state to declare Independence from England. Connecticut
One of the original 13 colonies, Connecticut can be found on the Atlantic coast. This was a New England colony and it was founded by Thomas Hooker and a few other colonists from Hartford. The first settlement was founded in what is now, present day Hartford. Maryland Toleration Act
this was a law that granted Religious freedom for Trinidadian Christians. This was the second time a law was passed for religious freedom in the colonies. This also made it a law that anyone who denied divinity of Jesus was sentenced to death. Carolina
Caroline was one of the original southern colonies. it was founded by a group of 8 English Nobels with a charter from King Charles the second. The charter was given in exchange for financial support and help him to get back to the throne. it wasn't until 1669 that the colony finally split into what is nowadays, North and South Carolina. Bacon's Rebellion
There were many problems, and it led to the dissent of the Virginia colony. There were many problems in Virginia at the time including, drop of tobacco prices, restricted English market, and rise in English goods. All these things led the people of Virginia to find someone to blame it on. They blamed everything on the Indians. Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania was also one of the original 13 colonies. Pennsylvania was one of the Middle colonies. it was founded by William Penn and some other colonists. Penn received a charter and it was supposed to be a place for Quakers to settle. Salem Witch Trials
The whole thing started because a few young girls claimed to be possessed by the Devil. there was chaos in the colonies, and everybody was accusing everybody of being a witch. in the end, there were about 150 people accused of witchcraft. -
Salutary Neglect
This was a British policy that allowed colonists to violate the laws of trade. There was no way to keep control of the people, and it was too expensive to send troops overseas. The main goal of this was for the colonists to pay extra taxes so England could pay off war debts. Great Awakening
The Great Awakening was a revival of Religion impacted the colonies. This happened because some Christians went from town to town preaching and telling the word. This changed the way people looked at religion. This also introduced enlightenment. this was a more scientific or logical way of seeing the world, and was almost a shot at religion. French-Indian war
This was a seven year war between France and Great Britain. The war decided who had control over the North America territory. It began because of a prior issue with the Ohio River. there was a dispute over who owned it. The British were the fist to the river, but the French came later with greater numbers, and that is when things began. Proclamation of 1763
This happened at the end of the French-Indian war. it was proposed by the British to calm down the Indians because of encroachment of settlers. It restricted settlers from going beyond the Appalachians. this was good for both sides. the Indians got to keep their land, and the settlers didn't have to worry about Indian attacks.
