Roanoke
Roanoke was founded by English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1587 the settlement was controlled by John White. He left for England to bring back supplies but when he returned to Roanoke, his settlement was gone and deserted. The word Croatoan was carved into the fences and CRO was carved into a tree. The only explanation for those words are the Croatoan Indians living in the nearby area.

Jamestown
Jamestown was the second settlement settled by the British. The colonists had no knowledge of the land or how to live there so many died or became ill from disease or malnutrition. They didn't know how to survive the winters or start farming with the new land. Native Americans stopped helping them due to poor treatment and bad leadership.

Salutary Neglect

House of Burgesses
The House of Burgesses was the first legislative group in the colonies. George Yeardley founded it in Jamestown, Virginia. The members would meet every year and make local laws and fix issues in the community including taxes.

Mayflower/Mayflower Compact/Plymouth
The British sent colonists over to the Americas on a ship called the Mayflower. The Mayflower Compact was the government rules they made for their new civilization.

Great Migration
English puritans migrated from Europe to the Americas. The migration lasted from 1620 to 1640 (20 years). The puritans left because of religious oppression and to find new land. They started colonies along the east coast in Virginia and Massachusetts.

New York
The Dutch settled at Fort Orange in 1624. The English took control of the area in 1664. Before it was called New York the Dutch named it New Amsterdam.

Rhode Island
Roger Williams founded Rhode Island when he was exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious views. The capital, Providence, was attacked two times during the King Philips War.

Carolina
Eight proprietors were granted land from King Charles II. The colony broke into North and South in 1729. The "lost colony of Roanoke" was located in North Carolina.

Pennsylvania

Bacon's Rebellion
Nathaniel Bacon led a group of settlers to attack British soldiers in a movement against Governor William Berkeley. Bacon died of dysentery and the rebellion stopped.

Salem Witch Trials
In the town of Salem, women were being accused of witchcraft and communication with the devil. This led to multiple executions and problems with the government and court. Great Awakening/Enlightenment
The Great Awakening spread Christianity and their belief system. Most people became Christians which made their society and government more stable because everyone was the same religion.

Albany Plan
Benjamin Franklin suggested the Albany Plan which would unite the governments of the thirteen colonies to become one. The crown did not approve it so the plan was never carried out.

Proclamation of 1763
