    Roanoke
In 1587 a group of 100 English settlers arrived on what's now the cost of North Carolina. When the group inevitably needed supplies their leader John White departed back to England with intent to return with the needed supplies , but was delayed because of a major naval war between England and Spain. When he returned after 3 years the only trace of his colony was the word "Croatoan" carved into a tree the meaning of "Croatoan" is generally accepted as being a island south of Roanoke.
