  • Roanoke

    Roanoke
    John White lead the settlement. The 1st British settlement. White left to get supplies and returned 3 years later to fine the whole settlement deserted. The Indians either befriended them or killed them off.
  • Jamestown

    Jamestown
    John Smith lead the settlement. The colony arrived in the middle of winter allowing few crops to grow. Only 38 of 150 survive.
  • House of Burgesses

    House of Burgesses
    The first legislature is made of Elected Representatives. Property owners could vote in Reps.
  • Mayflower, Plymouth, Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower, Plymouth, Mayflower Compact
    Established the colony's government. It stated that majority ruled. Men only had a say however. It was the 1st government plan of the colonies.
  • Great Puritan Migration

    During the 17th Century where the puritans migrated to Chesapeake and the West Indies. The puritans left England because of Religious hostility and financial reasons.

  • New York

    New York
    Settled originally by the Dutch, known as New Netherlands. They used the Patroon System which gave Dutch Landowners lots of land that they could rent to tenant farmers. The Duke of York eventually sends a naval fleet and New Netherlands surrendered.
  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    Massachusetts Bay Colony
    The Puritans settled the colony. 1,000 puritans came to purify the church. They were led by John Winthrop. were very strict with their rules that followed the church. Punishment's ranged from public humiliation, execution and banishment.
  • Maryland

    Maryland
    Southern Colony founded by Lord Baltimore. He convinced King Charles to give him 100 million acres for persecuted Catholics to settle. Baltimore's son later takes over and he gives out a 100 acres to every married couple. The region soon becomes Protestant.
  • Rhode Island

    Rhode Island
    A New England Colony. Settled by Roger Williams and 1,635 followers. Roger was banished from Massachusetts for speaking against the government for confiscating Native American land as punishment for not being Puritan. Rhode island has no religious persecution as a result.
  • Connecticut

    New England Colony settled by Thomas Hooker. Wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. 1st written constitution in NA. Citizenship was based on land ownership, NOT RELIGON!!!!

    Granted religous freedom to all Christians living Maryland.
  • Carolina

    Carolina
    A southern colony. King Charles granted 8 supporters land with access to trade. The people grew cash crops causing a huge need for labor. creating the need for slaves. By 1720 the amount of slaves outnumbered the Europeans 2 to 1.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    !!1st colonial rebellion against Royal control !! . Nathaniel Bacon raised an unauthorized militia of slaves to retaliate against N.A. Berkley responded with an army. Bacons rebellion destroys Jamestown. It is also the first rebellion against royal control.
  • Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania
    William Penn founded the colony. it was said to be the "Holy Expierement". 50 acres were given to each male settler as well as a right to vote. William Penn later becomes a Quaker and the colony becomes a haven for them.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    Young girls in Salem Village were said to have been possessed by the devil and accused a women of witchcraft. 150 people were imprisoned several died. One man was crushed to death for refusing to testify. Ended in September 1692 as the public finally saw the ridiculousness in their actions.

    The Colonial version of the Enlightenment, when science and reason became the focus and religion was getting pushed to the side. Religion was becoming less personal and about faith.     A plan to place the New England Colonies under one government and nation. only 7 joined, the plan was never carried out though.   • French-Indian War

    French-Indian War
    When the French were expanding their territory towards the Ohio River close to Virginia, claiming the Britain territory their own,tcaused tensions between the two countries. Once the French built a fort on the river the British colonists began to retaliate. After many battles against the Natives that sided with the French, the Treaty of Paris was signed.   • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    After the French and Indian War a treaty was made so that the Natives had the territory West of the Indies Mts. The Proclamation of 1763 stated that no British Colonists could settle past the indies mountains. This prevented conflict with the Natives. The colonists however did not want to be confined by the area given to them and settle west of the Indies anyway.
