Buying Manhattan
The Dutch West India Company bought Manhattan from the Manhates people for small Quantities of beads and other goods. Now with a good seaport the new city on Manhattan called New Amsterdam soon became a center of shippong to and from America. -
Puritans take over England
Puritans who controlled the Parliament were engaged in a struggle for power against King Charles 1st and a civil war began. Led by Oliver Cromwell the Parlimentary forces defeated the king. Later the king was beheaded and Cromwell became the Protector. -
The Act of Toleration
To protect the Catholics from any attempt to make Maryland a Protestant colony, Baltimore passed a law called the Act of Toleration which granted Protestants and Catholics the right to worship freely but tensions continued between Protestants and Catholics. -
England wants a colony
The English wanted the valuable Dutch colony that was between New Elgland and Southern Colonies. It had an ecellent harbor river trade. In 1664 England sent a fleet to attack the Dutch colony New Amsterdam. The Dutch
were not prepared for the attack and surrendered to the English. -
Bacon's Rebellion
Nathaniel Bacon, a wealtung planter, and other westerners were against the colonial government because it was dominated by easterners. The westerners resented Governor Berkeley's pledge to stay out of Native American territory so in 1676, Bacon led the angry westerners in attacks on Natives' villages. It showed that settlers were not willing to stay on the coast. -
Penn gets Pennsylvania
Willian Penn had presented a plan to King Charles and the King gave him land for it as a repayment for something his dad did. With the land he let "Quakers" settle there becauseeveryone else hated them. He also advertised Pennsylvania to Europeans so many would come settle in America in Pennsylvania. -
Colonist overcome a Duke
A govervor and council appointed by th Duke of York directed the colony's affairs. The colonists demanded a representative government like the government of the other English colonies. The Duke resisted the idea, but the people of New York didn't give up. Later they were allowed to elect a legislature. -
English Bill of Rights
King James's the II daughter Mary and her husband William signed the Bill guaranteeing certain basic rights to all citizens. -
Natives help the French
During the wars between Great Britian and France, Natives often helped the french by raiding British settlements. In 1704, the Abenaki joined the French in an attack on the British Frontier out post at Deerfield, Massachusetts. 50 settlers were killed. -
George Washington
Governor Robert Dinwiddie made George Washington a lieutenant colonel and was sent to the Ohio country wuth av militia. They had instructions to build a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River but The French were already there building Fort Duquesne so Washington established a small Post nearby called Fort Necessity.
