Roanoke
Sir Walter Raleigh founded Roanoke and John White was the leader. Roanoke is know know as the lost city because when John White returned from England all the people were missing. It was founded in August 1585. The people were ambitious to settle a permanent English colony. Roanoke was in Virginia.

Jamestown
It was the first permanent English settlement in North America. The Virginia Company founded it in 1607. They wanted to get a an advantage over other European countries in the new world. It was in Virginia.

The House of Burgesses
George Yeardley established the House of Burgesses. It was the first legislative assembly. The first meeting was July 30, 1619 in Virginia. The Virginians wanted to have control of their own rights.

Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact
In 1620, the pilgrims settled the Plymouth Colony. They came over on a ship called the Mayflower. The Mayflower Compact established the foundation for the colony's government. It was the first self government plan in the colonies. The Pilgrims and Wampanoag people came together and celebrated their harvest, which is now our modern day Thanksgiving.

Salutary Neglect
An unofficial statement that the British would be more lenient with the colonies and the people, as long as they stayed loyal to the government. This was active in the 17th and 18th centuries. It began in 1621 and ended in 1750. Robert Walpole initiated it.

The Puritan Great Migration
The English Puritans migrated between 1630 and 1642. They left because of religious persecution and a very hostile religious climate. They migrated to New England, the Chesapeake, and the West Indies.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
It was governed in 1630 by John Winthrop. It was a colony located in the New England region. It was settled by the Puritans, and the laws that governed the colony were tied to the beliefs of the Puritan church. The people that didn't follow the Puritan beliefs, or dissenters, were banished or made other New England colonies.

Maryland
Maryland was settled by Lord Baltimore in 1632. It was a southern colony. It was also a proprietary colony. It was a place for persecuted Catholics to settle. This led to the Toleration Act of 1649, which granted religious freedom to all Christians living in Maryland.

Rhode Island

Connecticut
Connecticut was founded by Thomas Hooker and Governor John Haynes. The colony of Connecticut was a producer of wheat and livestock. Hooker and Haynes arrived in 1636, and established the colony in 1638. It was on the east coast of America. It was established for farming, trade, and political freedom.

Maryland Toleration Act
This Act was established in 1649. Lord Baltimore wrote it. It applied in Maryland. It was set to assure Christians that they could freely practice their religion. They could freely exercise their religion without trouble.

Carolina
Carolina was settled in 1663 by supporters of King Charles II. It is a southern colony. The people planted and grew cash crops, which were very popular in the south. The colony eventually split into two colonies because Carolina was too big for one person to govern alone.

Bacon's Rebellion
The rebellion was led by Nathaniel Bacon. It was an armed rebellion against the rule of governor William Berkley. The trouble began in 1675, and actually started in 1676. It was caused by economic problems and great english losses. It took place in the colony of Virginia.

Salem Witch Trials
It was a series of investigations and persecutions of so thought "witches" from June 1692 TO May 1693. It happened after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.

Great Awakening/Enlightenment
The Great Awakening was a time where people bean thinking about new religious ideas more, and religion became a more prominent part of our culture. It happened in the 1730's. It permanently affected Protestantism. The Enlightenment was a time where people began to come up with new ideas and emphasized a logical side of the world, which downplayed religion.

It was a plan to create a single government for all the colonies. It was Benjamin Franklin's idea on July 10, 1754. Iwas created to bring all the colonies together. It occured in Albany, New York.

It was a war between the British and French that took place in 1756. They were fighting over the Ohio Territory. The French became allies with the Indians. They war started in 1756, and ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763.

Proclamation of 1763
This law was set in place in 1763, after the British won the seven years' war. It prohibited American colonists from settling west of the Appalacia. King George the third established the law so that they could avoid other problems in the future.
