Roanoke
Roanoke was established on Roanoke Island which is present day North Carolina. This English colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The governer of the colony, John White sailed back to Spain and got caught up in a war. When he finally returned in 1590, the colony was completely missing with nothing but the word "Croatoan" carved into a wooden post.
