John White returns to Roanoke in 1590. He does not find his colony anywhere. The only clue he finds is Croatoan carved on a tree. -

Jamestown
The Virginia Company sent 144 settlers in three ships. In April 1607, they entered Chesapeake Bay and sailed up a river. They name the river James and their new settlement Jamestown. -
Burgesses
Burgesses helped make laws for the colony. Land-owning male colonists could vote for their own burgesse. -
Plymouth
During their first winter, almost half of the Pilgrims dies. But in the spring they meet two Native American, Squanto and Samoset. They teach the colonists how to grow the five sisters. -
Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact settle up an orderly, organized government. Each signer promised to obey the laws passed. -
Massachusetts Bay
John Winthrop lead 900 men, women, and children to Massachusetts Bay. During the 1630s, more people came here to escape religious persecution. In 1634, adult male church members were allowed to vote for the governor and for representatives. -
New Amsterdam
The center of shipping to and from the Americas. -
Carolinas
King Charles II created a proprietary colony south of Virginia called Carolina. He gave the colony to eight nobles. The proprietors set up estates and sold or rented land to settlers brought from England. -
Pennsylvania
The Quakers founded the colony of Pennsylvania. They believed that everyone was equal. -
New York
New York was a colony where an owner or proprietor owned all the land and controlled the government. It had a very diverse population. -
Maryland
Cecilius gave large estates to English aristocrats. He also granted smaller pieces of land to other settlers. The colony imported indentured servants and enslaved Africans. -
New Jersey
To attract settlers, the proprietors offered large tracts of land, freedom of religion, trial by jury, and a representative assembly. But New Jersey did not develop a major city or port. -
Georgia
This colony was the last British colony in America. Where debtors and poor people could make a fresh start.
