Residential Schools
Residential schools were schools for the Native children of Canada run by the Cathlic churches. Native children who went here got removed from their families, weren't aloud to learn about their ancestral languages, and many physically and sexually abused by staff and other students. -
Laurier becomes Prime Minister
Wilfrid Laurier was Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911.He lost the election in 1911 but continued in polotics until he died. He was known as the 'Great Compromiser' because he found an exelent compromise for every situation. -
The Boer War
The Boeer Warbegan in 1899 and ended in 1903 in South Africa. The British asked for money from the Candaians, The English-Canadians wanted to help them, but the French-Canadians did not think they should, -
Naval Crisis
Britian wanted money from Canada to build more ships. The English-Canadians were for this, but the French-Canadians were against this. Laurier decided that Canada would build it's own Navy to solve this problem and if the British needed their help, then volunteers would go fight for the British. -
Women win the right to Vote
Women in Canada won the right to vote after the war, women in the war proved that they deserve equal rights as men by demonstrating they could be just as helpful as the men.Sistsers, wives and mothers of important and Military men won the right to vote first and then all other women did later -
Ypres
The babtle of Ypres took place near Frasnce. It was teh first war where chemical warfare was used. The Germans used it on the Canadians. Canadians peed on rags and put them over their face so that they wouldn't die from the Chemicals. -
Battle of Somme
This battle took place in Newfoundland. During this war, the first tanks were used and is also remembered for the huge casualties for Newfoundland. -
Conscription WW1
The first world war was expected to only last a couple of weeks, but ended up lasting a couple of years.
Britain and France needed more soldiers, so men randomly started getting signed up to go fight at war, because they ran out of volunteers, Many people were against this, while some people were for it, to help their family members fight. -
Vimmy Ridge
Vimmy Ridge took place on Eater Monday in France. Canadians proved great strength in this war, taking 100m every 3 minutes. It was a great victory for Canadians. -
Battle of Passchendale
This battle took place in Belgium. This event is important because Canadians earned the rep of "storm Troopers". The conditions were terrible, there was very deep mud everywhere but Canadians never gave up and kept going. -
Halifax Explosion
The Halifax Explosion was caused by a ship carrying highly explosive items crashing by accident into another ship, killing 1600 people and blowing up 2 Kilometeres squared of Halifax. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was a peace settlement signed by Germany, created by The Big 3 (Britain,France and USA) after the war agreeing to do certain things (paying 30 billion dollars, having no Navy, only allowed a 100 000 soldier army, no planes or tanks) Germany also had to take full responsiblity for the whole war. -
Prohibition
Alcohol was illegal to buy or have. If you were caught with alcohol you had to drain it in the streets. -
The Stock Market Crash
The stock market crashed all over the world in late October 1929, causing the great depression in the thirties. -
Onto Ottawa Trek
1600 strikers headed to Ottawa from Vancouver,BC on boxcars on June 13th. They reached Regina, Saskatchewn but couldn't go any further due to Borden telling the RCMPs to not let them any further. They became known as the "On to Ottawa Trek". -
Conscription of WW2
In 1937 there were only 200 000 soldiers fighting for Britain. This was not enough to fight a war with Germany and in April 1939 so the government created the Military Training Act. All men between the ages of 20 and 21 had to register for six months' military training. This listed occupations that were essential to the war effort and stated that those employed in those jobs were exempt from conscription. -
Battle of Britain
The Germans invaded Britain, with the goal of taking over the skies. The Germans failed and were defeated with the help from France and the RCAF. -
CAMP X
Camp X was created in 1941. It was a top secret training facility for spies in Ontario, Canada. -
Battle of Dieppe
The Battle was a total disaster for Canadians. On their way across the English Channel, they ran into a enemy boat. The boat reported to the Germans that enemies were coming and the Germans met the Canadians on the beach. Nearly 1000 Canadians died and nearly 2000 were taken prisoner. -
Battle of the Atlantic
The Battle started in June 1943 and ended in May 1945. This war for the water was the longest naval battle. The Germans wanted to cut off the supplies to Britain. The Canadian Navy and Allies defeated Germany.
