1603-1616 Willem Jansz was the first European to set his foot on Australia he was dutch.In 1603, Willem Jansz sailed his ship to the western side of Cape York Peninsula. Jansz was the first European to make contact with the Aboriginal people of Australia. After his crew was killed by Aboriginal people, Jansz suggested that the land should be avoided. -

Dirk Hartog discovered the west coast of Australia in 1616.In 1616 captained by Dirk Hartog, was the second Dutch ship to land on australia. Dirk Hartog with his sailors were trying to discover a way shorten the time it took to sail across the Indian Ocean to the Spice islands. While trying to sail from Holland to Java, Hartog went off his easterly course. He instead found the west coast of Australia near Shark Bay and landed on an island. -

In 1770 captain Cook discovered the east side of Australia. He claimed the east coast from the directions of King George III of England on 22 August 1770 he claimed the Island naming eastern Australia 'New South Wales'. The coast of Australia was mapped in detail by the English men Bass and Flinders, and the Frenchman Baudin. When cook first came the aborigines tried to scare the british away by shaking their spears so then captain cooks people shot at them. -

The main reasons they came were the jails were full of convicts in england, america had gained independence recently so they couldn't send convicts their, they didn’t want the french or dutch to get it because they wanted to be the biggest empire and britain liked the trades with the other country’s near by. -

Perspectives soldier- The conditions on this boat is really bad I can’t wait to land and boss around theses worthless convicts. (When they land) Finally we are here my job is to guard and control the convicts. It’s hard work here I can’t wait to go back to britain after my duty is done. Convicts- I’m really sick i’m hungry and there's rats and insects all over the boat all I did was steal a loaf of bread to survive. -

May 1787 the British government sent the First Fleet 20,000 kilometres around the world it was captained by arthur phillip who was also chosen to lead the colony. It was the largest fleet to enter the Pacific ocean. The 11 ships filled with convicts, navy and supplies arrived in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788.when the british came they shot at and killed the aboriginal people. -

During the 1890s each colony sent a representative to meetings about how to make a new federation. colonies had a vote about wanting to become a nation and most people didn’t want to break away from the queen but wanted to join as a nation. In 1900 the british parliament said yes that australia could become one nation. So the australian constitution was made to make laws for the new country. -

Western australia did not want to join at first but they joined before 1901. on january the first 1901 it was official australia was now a country and their was big parades, sporting events and other celebrations. The first prime minister was sir Edmund Barton who was prime minister for 2 years before he became one of three judges who made australia's high court. -

Australians believed that it was their job to fight to defend the british empire they also believed that they should be fighting to make the world a better place . When the war went on less aussies enrolled so they started putting up propaganda posters to persuade people to join the army. -

Gallipoli was a massive fail and 26,111 australian troops died there and that was a big moment in australia’s history. at the western front the main and most famous battle there was the battle of the somme in 1916 it was a huge victory for australia and the allies but cost 24,000 australian casualties. -

Sport They brought cricket over which everyone plays in their backyard and australia are the best in the world at it and we also have the ashes which is a cricket series. They brought over books and things like shakespeare and english literature and books from charles dickens and other famous authors.
