  • Baby Boom

    The Baby Boom went from 1945 - 1954. This is when the birthrate in America increased tremendously. The birthrate went from 9 million (in the 30s) to 29 million (in the 50s). This was to make up for lost time during the Great Depression and WWII. It was either too difficult or too expensive to have children back then. There was better health care for children and women during the 40s and 50s.
  • United Nations

    The United Nations was a peacekeeping organisation that was located in New York City. This took place in 1945. Their jobs were to solve disputes, solve disease and hunger issues, improve education, and get people vaccinated. The six bodies were General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice, Trusteeship, Secretariat, and Security council. The Security Council was the most important council, containing the most powerful countries like USA, UK, FR, RU, and China.
  • NATO/Warsaw Pact

    First, NATO was an organisation called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. These were the WWII Allies agreeing to help each other if they were attacked. This took place in Brussels, Belgium. However, the Warsaw Pact existed. This was the Soviet Union's alliance to go against NATO. It ended in 1991.
  • Brown vs Board

    The Brown vs Board of education was when they went up against segregation in order to try and stop it. Brown won the case and segregation stopped. However, it took much longer for the new law to be nationally accepted. This was especially the case for southern states that were so used to the laws.
  • Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy

    Robert F. Kennedy, the brother of John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. This happened in Los Angeles, CA at Ambassador Hotel. He was walking through the kitchen to avoid the crowd when Sirhan Sirhan shot him with a .22 calibre pistol. He was shot three times, twice in the chest and once in the head. Sirhan was angry about KEnnedy's support for Isreal's military policies. He died June 6th at age 42. He was buried in Arlington, Washington D.C. Sirhan was sentenced to life in prison in San Diego.
  • Watergate

    This happened in the HeadQuarters of Washington D.C. 5 Men had broken into the headquarters to steal ideas. They were caught due to the last guy leaving the door open. Nixon claimed to not have known anything, but Deep Throat (AKA: William Mark Felt) revealed secret footages of Nixon's involvement with the situation. Nixon was put on trial but ended up being the very first president to resign from his job. He resigned in fear of being found out and exposed.
  • Jimmy Carter

    Jimmy Carter was one of the many presidents of America. He ran from 1976 - 1980 and was in the Democratic Party. Before his presidency, he was governor of Georgia. Two big events he was involved in was the Helsinki Agreement and the Olympic Boycott. He was known for SAT II, Iran taking hostages, Social Security Act, and Camp David Accords. Jimmy Carter was also a millionaire peanut farmer and the first president to be born in a hospital.
  • Challenger Explosion

    The Challenger was carrying its first civilian passenger, Christa McAuliffe. NASA wanted to revive interest in going to space. This took place in Cape Canaveral, Florida. There were millions watching at home. However, at 11:39 am, black smoke appeared and in exactly 74 seconds, the ship began to burst into flames. It disintegrated over the Atlantic.There were no survivors and the director of the event was fired and the program was put on hold for almost 3 years or 32 months.
  • Persian Gulf War

    The director of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, sent 100,000 troops into Kuwait. America wanted to deal with this since Kuwait was a rich oil producer who we bought oil from. We wanted to stop Iraq from spreading the influence into the Middle East. When we sent our forces there, we launched an air attack called "Desert Storm". 28 other countries joined in and within 24 hours, Iraqi defence missiles were useless. When the war was over. It costed billions of dollars to rebuild and some of that to clean oil.
  • Barack Obama Inauguration

    Obama was inaugurated in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, January 20th, 2004. He was the first African American president and over a million attended the ceremony and millions of others watched from T.V. or on internet. This was one of the most observed global events in history. He took an oath from Chief Justice John Roberts. Michelle Obama held the same Bible that was used by Abraham Lincoln during his inauguration. Tickets were expensive ranging from $1,750 - $20,000.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    This was the costliest hurricane to ever happen. The hurricane started out as a category 5, then became a category 3 once it hit land. In New Orleans, the Leuce broke, causing flooding that covered 80% of the city. The highest wind gust recorded from the event was 175 mph. The cost of the event was $81 billion. There were 150,000 homes destroyed and 900 churches destroyed. This affected for 90,000 miles and there were 1,836 people who died and 705 who were missing. 70 countries donated to us.
