    Jackie Robinson
    Jackie Robinson was born in Georgia on January 31, 1919. When he was in high school he moved to California and went to UCLA in collage where he played baseball,track,basketball, and football. After collage he joined the army during WWII and was the 2nd Lieutenant. When he came home home he joined the Brooklyn dodgers. 1947, he became the first African American to join major league baseball. Jackie Robinson impacted society because, his number 42 was retired from major league baseball.
  • Jimmy Carter

    Jimmy Carter
    Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924 in Georgia. He was president from 1976-1980. Carter was a Democrat, who was Governor of Georgia. Carter did very important things such as beginning the Salt 11 and taking Iran's hostages. Also, he passed the social security act, and won the Camp David awards. Although Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer before his presidency and went to the naval academy. Jimmy carter impacted politics because he created the Helsinki agreement Olympic boycott in 1980.

    Baby Boom took place in the U.S. on 1945-1954. Baby Boom was when the husbands went to war, but when they got out of war they came home to their wives. They then had many children which caused the populating to increase for more than 20 million people. This was important because, there was better health care for children and pregnant women. This event also made up for lost time during the Great Depression and WWII. Baby Boom impacted politics because, many political officers are baby boomers.

    NATO Warsaw Pact
    NATO was formed in 1949 as a response to the Warsaw Pact. NATO was a group of Western countries, including the US who formed an alliance against the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw Pact was made up of European nations who supported communism. The NATO and Warsaw Pact impacted politics because the the two opposing groups caused a political divison in Europe resulting in a military standoff for years.
  • Korean War

    6/5/50 North and South Korea went to war. This was because North Korea wanted the South Korea to be communists but still be communists themselves. Although, when North Korea went to war they were running out of supplies, and were becoming out numbered. Eventually, South Korea pushed North Korea back, but this didn't work because North Korea got the Chinese to join them which made the South Korea leader MacArthur to surrender. The Korean War impacted economy because many families were split up.
  • Vietnam War

    1955 South Vietnam became communist and other south east Asian countries would as well. The war was mostly fought in the same areas. In Some areas there were woman and children but the U.S. never understood why. The Tet Offensive did occur causing South Vietnam to get stronger. The peace talk did cause deaths in Cambodia. There were millions of people that died in the war fighting for the U.S. The Vietnam War impacted politics because it cost billions of dollars and it divided the U.S.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    In 1962, an American U-2 spyplane took a photo of the missile sites in Cuba. JFK told the American's this, who feared a nuclear war. There was a 13 day standoff between the Soviet Union's ships with the missiles and the US naval blockade. At the last minute, Soviet Ships turned away and then took missiles out of Cuba. In 1963, a direct "hotline" was installed between the US and the Soviets to help diffuse similar situations. The Cuban Missile Crisis impacted politics between the two countries.
  • Man on the Moon

    Man on the Moon
    On 7/20/1969, the Apollo 11 Spacecraft landed on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon, along with Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. He described the surface as being like powdered charcoal. While there, they planted an American Flag and gathered moon samples to later study. The Man On the Moon impacted society because, due to history being made when the US was the first to land on the moon. "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

    Space Shuttle Challenger
    On January 28, 1986 in cape Canaveral, Florida 7 astronauts were on a mission to travel to the moon for the first time in history. Although there were complications such as, there was black smoke coming out of the o-ring of the booster rocket. Then, the shuttle took of into the sky and discriminated. After this accident, President Reagan canceled the state of union address. The Space Shuttle Challenger affected politics because, program was put on hold for 32 months before another launch.
  • Persian Gulf War

    Persian Gulf War
    1/16/91 Iraq leader, Saddam Hussein ordered an invasion into Kuwait, then refused to remove troops after being ordered to do so by the United Nations. An air strike was initiated on 1/16/1991 due to Hussein's refusal. The US military lead an air and lands trike called Operation Desert Storm. President Bush called for a cease fire on 2/28/91. Most Iraq forces had surrendered or fled by that time. The Persian Gulf War impacted economy because it cost billions to rebuild and clean up oil spills.

    Iraq/Afghanistan Wars
    In Oct. of 2001, The Iraq/Afghanistan War started, lasting over 10 yrs, as a response to 911 terrorist attacks. There was concern that Iraq was employing weapons of mass destruction by leaders Saddan Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. US troops were attacked by Al-Qaida and Taliban with about 6,882 US casualties. The Iraq/Afghanistan wars impacted society, economy, and politics. Oil reserves were protected for the economy, people in society felt safer, and the US helped Iraq elect a new government.
  • Hurricane Katrina

    Hurricane Katrina
    2005 Hurricane Katrina was a major damaging storm, flooding 80% of New Orleans and causing a lot of destruction. Winds picked up to 175 MPH. Total damage cost $81 billion. 1,836 people were confirmed dead and 705 people were missing and never found. This was devastating to the entire country, especially to those who had family there. Hurricane Katrina affected society because many lives were lost and there was a lot of destruction. Seventy countries around the world helped by donating money.
