An international organization to secure international security and pease. They promoted social progress better living standards, and human rights. -
Truman Doctrine
Program meant to encourage people to resist communism. The US paid $400 million worth of military and economics to Greece and Turkey to help fight off their communist threats. -
Marshall Plan
Program kind of like the Truman Doctrine. The US gave $12 billion to aid Western Europe more specifically to our friends France and England. -
Nato formed
Nato or North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance. The purpose of nato was to make sure that there was peace in Europe and they wanted to promote cooperation and guard freedom of the members. -
Hollywood 10
A group of 10 people that were refusing to attest to an anti-communist committee hearing. They also refused to answer any questions regarding a suspected affiliation with communists. -
Korean War
The only physical fighting during the Cold War. This war was fought between North and South Korea. North Korea invaded South Korea due to conflicts at the border and rebellions in South Korea. -
US officially entered Vietnam War
The United States entered the Vietnam War in order to try and stop the spread of communism but there were other factors involved including economic interests, foreign policy, national fears, and geographical strategies. -
Space Race/Sputnik
The USSR launched a satellite the size of a basketball that became the first ever manmade object to go around the earth. The USSR released this satellite because there was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. They debated about unnamed space probes, space capabilities like the artificial satellite that was launched, and also human fighting in space. -
Bay of pigs
A failed invasion of Cuba that was launched and set it place by the US CIA. The goal of this invasion was to overthrow a ruler named Castro and and put in place a non communist government that was friendly to the United States. -
Berlin Wall goes up
Was a 2 day process. Wall was being built August 12th and 13th. The Berlin Wall was a physical reminder of the Iron Curtain. -
Soviets invade Afghanistan
This invasion was the result of wanting to spread a local pro-soviet government that had been put in place years before. They invaded Afghanistan by sending in thousands of men and then took almost full political and military control. -
Berlin Wall goes down
The Berlin Wall was being knocked down and ruined by troops from East Germany which was the communist government. Germany opened up the border because of political reforms that were happening inside of the walls.
